 You are right in a sense. However, whenever the bass is good, or really outstanding one really pay attention to it. Probably more than to the rest of the instruments. As in many Squire´s, listen "21st century"  and many more.

If a bass is uninspired, you can forget the whole band. There is no such thing as an easy job.
