BTW, I tend to think that the PA's RIO/Avant genre is kind-of polluted by the presence of Zappa in it. Fairly few Zappa album are actually avant proper albums, especially those topping the PA Top list (Hot Rats, Wazoo, etc.)

Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally, Aria Palea, Djam Karet. Great musical genre.

I lean both ways. I'm a big fan of both symphonic prog and avant-prog. Present, Thinking Plague, Horse Lords, 5uu's, and Henry Cow are among my favorite bands of the genre. I've also taken a liking to the avant-prog stuff coming out of France, such as PoiL, ni, and Le Grand Sbam. Totally agree with others that the most innovative bands are coming from the avant areas, but I also like my share of retro too. I can be vast, like a four-slice toaster, or soupy, like an eight-wheeled Winnebago.

Regarding contemporary stuff, these days I really enjoy the music by the Ukrainian band Gravitsapa. They released this album in February 2023. It is strongly recommended!
