I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

You have to be kidding!!
This is like comparing apples and bananas.
Pink Floyd is without a doubt the best Psychedelic/Space Rock band of all times!!
And, YES is one of the best Symphonic Bands of all times but, the best?..ummmh I am not sure totally about that...
I probably would had compared YES against GENESIS,VDGG,ELP,KC etc..you get the point!!!
But since the poll is done!!...I have to stick with PF, since they put out so many different albums (just to mention in what I believe ther pinnacle!!!... Dark side, Wishing you... and Animals!!!) these three sounding so different from each other but, at the same time belonging to the same Genre, and they are to me individual MASTERPIECES .... that is in my opinion, the major difference between these two oustanding bands, and what makes PF so unique overall, not just against YES but most all the others progressive rock bands in general.
There you have it!!!....plain and simple.

Great review.
Yes, in order to define "The best", youŽd have to evaluate them on aspects any band from any genre can be measured by. (Is "by" correct here?)
Like: Diversity, original concept, original sounds, original style in general, diversity within their discography, intrumentation skills, lyrics, Songwritting, creativity to perform a wide range of atmospheres, moods, "images".....
In such case, IŽd go for Pink Floyd

i like pink floyd very much, but yes is just amazing. bill bruford (my favourite drummer), chris squire (one of my favourite bassists), steve howe (an amazing guitarist), jon anderson (his voice is unique) and rick wakeman (the best keybordist in the world together with keith emerson). man this is one of the bests formation of all times!!!
