While the two can be compared/ contrasted, one doesn't have to draw-out comparisons between the bands to choose which band one prefers. I quite like VDGG (love some of the band's stuff) and largely dislike Dream Theater from the rather limited material of DT's that I know. I'm not keen on DT style-metal. I'm not that into metal, but the metal influenced (metal fusion music) I do like tends to be listed here under Art Rock and Avant Prog. I'd take Estradasphere, for instance, any day over Dream Theater.

Very different bands to vote,
anyway i vote for Dream Theater because VDGG always make the same experimental music and DT change his music in every album (but without changing his style).
two great bands with different music and different art, i think this poll is meaning less because all the people is gonna vote fo VDGG because they are 100% prog and DT is a mix of different rock.

I do like DT a lot also. But their discography doesn't compare to VDGG's + I like the emotion that goes with the vocals and the lyrics of VDGG.

How could such an absurd Poll get 4 pages of opinions and 100 votes ??. My polls are always a failure. Once I started a "lizard vs Atom heart mother" Poll with a large range of options and it worked for only a dozen of votes.

I like them both for different reasons, but overall I like Van Der Graaf Generator more by quite a bit.
Now if this were Pain of Salvation vs. Van der Graaf Generator, that I would be unsure of.

clearly asked what band you SUBJECTIVELY prefer, not which band is
better, nor does this question ask to compare both of them or find any
commonality between them! That has nothing to do with the
question! I don't know why all of you have to make something so
easy so goddamn difficult. It's like asking someone whether they
prefer pizza or sushi. Or would you still complain that pizza and
sushi are too dissimilar for you to be able to say which one you
preferred! No comparison is being done between VDGG and DT, nor
did the poll say they were related at all! Why are you guys
making something out of nothing? Just say which band you PREFER,
it's as easy as that. VDGG for me.
