Hi ssmarcus!!
You are right!!, my mistake, ill replace Enslaved with VOLA. I recommend 2 records by the band Alcest, their debut "Souvenirs D´un Autre Monde" and "Les Voyages De L´ame", Neige is really a genious, basically he created a new genre.

Not really. I tried, though. I added Bandcamp links to what feels like the top ten for me today. I could probably come back to you tomorrow, and choose a different selection! 😜 |

I totally hear where you're coming from. I grew up with a lot of New Wave of American Heavy Metal with bands like Lamb of God, God Forbid, Shadows Fall, and to a lesser extent, Killswitch Engage. For me Periphery really took that vibe but utilized techniques from more technical forms of metal (mathcore, tech-death, guitar virtuoso stuff). It was almost a natural evolution for me.

So Enslaved is technically out of contention but no doubt their 2010's output has been nothing short of incredible. Which Alcest record would recommend? I have never listened to them.

Sorry I know Im being confusing. Basically Im looking for bands that really define the 2010's for you that weren't already super established from the previous generation. So DT and Opeth already made a name for themselves in the 90's. Haken and Leprous are examples of bands that really became "elite" in the 2010's. Between the Buried and Me and Mastodon fall on the line but I gotta draw it somewhere! |

I've come to this genre from the Avant / RIO direction so that tends to be reflected in my tastes here, its coming from bands like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and the experimental edgy math rock bands like Upsilon Acrux & Zevious. The keyboard player in Ephemeral Sun is a good friend so glad to give them a shout out (and the albums are great)

Every one of those is great. Is that your order, too? Of those five, I think my order would be White Walls Mother of Millions Skyharbor Disperse Subsignal Not sure any of them would quite make my top five, though? 🤔 Maybe White Walls..... 🤘🏻 |

Hahaha, i've only heard their release from last year which I enjoyed, nothing earth shattering but overall pretty good. The only other thing ive heard from them is the song marigold which kicks ass! Yeah I only got deep into prog metal the last year, but unfortunately that hasn't included keeping super up to date on newer bands.
Periphery is not for me unfortunately, a little too abrasive for me and I don't really like the metalcore style of vocals. Edited by dougmcauliffe - March 11 2021 at 07:15 |

I would say it’s more likely that those not huge in the genre are the ones who will end up liking the more obscure acts. Prog metal is definitely one of my least favourite genres to listen to (although there are plenty of prog metal bands and artists I enjoy), and a lot of what I like tends to be those obscure acts, I guess? Plus, of course, what seems obscure to one person is not necessarily to others... I struggled to think of any bands or artists that particularly stood out for me, which is why I made a list of bands and artists whose albums I enjoyed last year. As I read back on the other posts, I’m seeing quite a few names that would probably be fighting for a position in my top five for this time period. I, definitely going to be watching this thread, to see what other names pop up. 👍🏻 |

I’m so underwhelmed by them, that my go to album is the last one from the band that preceded them. 😜 |

I don’t know if I have any particular favourites. But the following 30 bands put out some music I thoroughly enjoyed last year, that is progressive metal in one form or another. As far as I’m aware, all these bands fit the bill - but I admit to not checking their discography to see when the first release was for any of them.
