Hi, And a good thing, too ... or his time would be remembered in song and farts .... (...Note: This just in case you never have seen the 1776 musical ... sit down John ... shut up John ... ) |

The Killing Kind
This psychological drama is as good as anything I've seen in the genre for a while. Emma Appleton taking the lead is a new face to me but Colin Morgan will be familiar for playing Merlin in the 00's BBC drama. Lots of twists and turns and constantly kept me guessing. 8/10 |

I did get to watch this in the end partly on my sisters recommendation but also I do like Sam Neil a lot (he's also in an Aussie drama called The Twelve which is worth catching) I binged the last 5 episodes over one evening so quite enjoyed it. The ending is something of a cop out though and I wonder if that is how it was in the book. Not terrible but probably could have been punchier. Nevertheless I would go slightly higher with 6.5/10. Now onto Joan starring Sophie Turner of GOT. Only watched the first episode but it's very intriguing stuff. Set in the 80's it's about a young mother trying to get away from an abusive husband as well as making her way in the world. She decides that the uncoventional way might the best it seems.

Franklin
Michael Douglas scores a late career high with his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin (one of America's founding fathers and a successful and accomplished diplomat/policitician but never to become president). This deals with his attempt to forge an alliance between America and France in order to help fight British rule. It's almost entirely set in Paris and features a superb cast of top French and British actors as well as Douglas himself in the lead role. I found it especially interesting in capturing the mega rich and their opulent Parisienne lifestyles of the day. 8/10

Finished Nightsleeper yesterday (well early hours of the morning actually!). It's brilliantly written and the cast (inc Joe Cole, James Cosmo, Sharon Rooney, Alexandra Roach and the wonderful David Threlfall especially) do a great job. Even at times some great humour and a hugely ironic but satisfying twist at the very end. It's quite a ride! 9/10

Nightsleeper - no we aren't watching it - but it does look good from the trailers I've seen - will give it a go sometime. No, our (her) time is taken up with Strictly Come Dancing (and it's sister show) - but worse than that MAFS UK - urggh. And now Great British Bake Off as well.
But we did squeeze in the start of the 4th and final season of Snowpiercer last night and it's still pretty good. |

^ I watched that straight after Strictly. I love both Annette Benning and Sam Neil so that might be enough to drag me through it.
I expect you are watching Nightsleeper but if not then worth a look. I'm only through 3 episodes but it's very addictive 'terrorist on a runaway train' stuff with lots of twists already. Also I've always had a soft spot for the lovely Alexandra Roach

Twisted Metal was great.
Just finished watching a US drama on BBBC iPlayer called Apples Never Fall. 7 episodes starring Sam Neil and Annette Benning. It had promise but a slow burner with a rather unsatisfactory conclusion. I'll blame it on the missus as it was her choice. 5/10 |

^ Never got into video games. In terms of TV adaptions the recent Fallout is superb although I also enjoyed Halo a lot. Twisted Metal has been kept a lot 'lighter' with a lot less pretensions and presumably is made on a much smaller budget. That makes it stand out a bit and is in its favour. Hopefully they might get a bigger budget but not holding my breath.

Twisted Metal Season 1
Humour lead post apocalypse drama starring Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz. Enjoyable if a little bit 'slight'. The speeded up car scenes look really fake but Mackie and Beatriz enjoy a nice chemistry and also good to see Neve Campbell in a villanious role of sorts. 7/10

^ Thank you for this. Never been a big Star Wars fan and couldn't watch the Mandalorian, actlually hated it. I may well check out the Acolyte if I go back to Disney for a month ( I want to see The Old Man Season 2 so I may).

The Acolyte
Having recently learned of the absurd and deeply unfortunate reactions this series received ~ the accusations of 'wokeness', the blindness and utter lack of comprehension or discernment that the Star Wars galaxy is a vast corollary of thousands of races, worlds, powers and mysteries ~ its cancellation is a travesty of ignorance overcoming art. Creator/writer Leslye Headland offered a deeper, more meaningful story than the kid & family oriented Mandalorian, exploring the viewpoint of practitioners of the Dark Side of the Force but also how the Jedi dealt with the ongoing relationship between its own and the temptations of the darker arts. A talented cast including Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, and Manny Jacinto bring the story alive with sensitive performances giving fans a more serious, adult plotline that takes place near the end of the High Republic a hundred years before SW:Episode One involving two twin girls created by a coven of Night Sisters. Currently a second season is not planned partly due to low ratings as well as fan disagreement and bad online responses. Hopefully, somehow, Season Two will be made as it ended with quite a cliffhanger, but as of this writing there are no intentions to revive it. And that is a real shame. I've only just got round to Season 1 which is on Paramount+. I didn't hate it and the episode with Barbara Hershey I loved. Mostly it gets a bit lost narrative wise and doesn't quite make you believe it's out in the great expanse of space. The fact that Headey isn't in Season 2 might be a good thing (I won't miss that dodgy northern accent) although your rating isn't quite suggesting that . 5/10 for Season 1. I'll probably watch Season 2 when it's available as there isn't that much sci-fi out there and it's my favourite genre.

1899 - Made by the same people who made the excellent Dark. I'm not sure why now but I though, like Dark, it was in German language. It's not and whilst it's mainly English there is also Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Norwegian spoken throughout (so subs are a must). It's not quite as good as Dark, but a great mystery nonetheless and it certainly has the same feeling and intrigue. But the biggest flaw is that Netflix did not renew for a second season. It's a real shame as while this season does end (-ish), there could be so much more to this story as the last frame is a mind blower. Very good 8/10

A Gentleman In Moscow
Based on a 2016 novel, this is set during the end of the Stalin era and is quite brutal at times, never pulling its punches. Stars Ewan McGregor and his real life parter Mary Elizabeth Winstead, McGregor's character is virtually imprisoned in a hotel in Moscow for political reasons. Doesn't seem that promising a premise, but I enjoyed it a lot as the story unfolds. 8/10

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 (the last one). The Umbrella Academy has always stayed just under that "being ridiculous" line (unlike Doom Patrol) and has generally been a great watch. This last season has a feeling of being rushed to end it all (only 6 episodes). But I'm still liking it and I'll be a bit sad to see it end. 8/10 this season 8.5/10 overall.

If you remember the Sky One series Mad Dogs and look fondly back on that then check out Stags from Paramount+. Mostly filmed on Tenerife, it's set in a South American prison on an unamed island. Think of the worst foreign prison you can imagine and multiply by a 100. Surrounded by landmines and run by a psychopathic brother and sister, this is nasty in so many ways. An English stag party unwittingly get banged up there after one of their number is arrested for traffiking drugs. It's very violent in a darkly humorous way but I can't stress this more, don't watch while eating any food!

House of the Dragon season 2. Wow they really are dragging this out. I've read the book 'Fire and Blood' and this timeline in the book is only a few chapters at most. There is a lot going on in the TV show that's not in the book. That said, it's still enjoyable and the acting is great, especially Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy. The dragons look cool too. Near the end, I said to my wife wait till you see what happens with the three new dragon riders - except it never got to that bit. Do I tell her or not? Haha.
