and yet I've just read that he had Jewish friends and even some say he had Jewish blood. also some say he had some kind of socialist views as well. A fascist he was not.

Wagner was openly antisemite. Sure he lived well before the nazis, but his political views were and are highly compatible with what Hitler was on about.
Wagner is not like Nietzsche, who was wrongfully heralded as a 'proto-nazi' for his writings about "the superman". Wagner though was the real deal, a fascist...and a musical prodigy. |

Love the first two Maiden albums - in fact I think those are the only ones I continue to play (plus Live after Death which is my fave). Never heard of Di'anno's dark side tbh, but I guess I don't care. I've always been able to distinguish between the music and the person behind it. That's why I still love Bobby Beausoleil's Lucifer Rising (Bobby killed a drug dealer in cold blood supposedly for selling him bum mescalin) and the early Burzum albums.
Then again I know people who feel the exact opposite. My dad for instance will never ever in a million years consider listening to a piece of Wagner music simply because of his affinity for fascism. It becomes more difficult when this happens in visual media though. Personally I have a hard time watching anything with Bill Cosby in it. Seeing him around the Huxtable kids today is nigh on absurd. |

^ I've done the 'compare and contrast' thingy of him singing in Maiden in the early 80's (I have a proper VHS of an '81 performance) and seeing him now. I thought he got the sh*t end of the straw, but if he's bashing around beautiful women, then that's it. I will find it hard to spin early Maiden. This is the worst thing...... I'm no 'Angel' but this sh*t is not on and I'm now pretty pissed he was such a w**ker................. I don't care if he has all the drugs he wishes, all dodgey mates etc. but when it comes to being a c**t to the fairer gender.......this, I did NOT want to hear of him..........

He spoke quite candidly about it in his autobiography, The Beast (http://www.amazon.com/Beast-Singing-Maiden-Drugs-Groupies/dp/1844548848). Now I think he's cleaned up his act, but he was a rather unsavoury character back in the day. |

^ O.K. When I bought the 2LP back in '98, on the grounds of the BRILLIANT X Factor, yes, I was disappointed. But I have grown to really admire it over the many years I've spun it.
@ Raff - was Di'anno abusing women ?? I am aware he's many (unsavoury) things but now this......? CURVEBALL.......... Now I've lost ALL respect for him (not that I'm a model citizen.........  ) but this is too much. May he get what he deserves.................Raff, how did you find this out ? |

I got into Iron Maiden right from their debut album, and they have always been one of my favourite bands. Their first two albums are great, and truly groundbreaking in many ways - and, as Blacksword pointed out, DiAnno's voice was perfect for their early material. However, the guy is a notorious woman abuser, and this makes it hard for me to relate to him. Though art and life should be kept separate as much as possible, sometimes it is difficult to do so.

^ No. Just flipped to the 2nd vinyl. Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger. Really good.
Futureal, The Clansman, Two Worlds Collide, Eyes Of A Stranger = CLASSIC Maiden. Repetitive choruses, standard-ish structures etc. but it all works with mighty head-banging potential too. I really love this album, but yes, it's a weaker effort from them (3 star). I will spin Koloss (Meshuggah) when this finishes, but I love Maiden with all my heart, Di'Anno, Bayley AND Bruce. And I could never 'sell my soul' to Metal........Not in the 30-odd years I've offered some time to. Only select bands and stylings. But Maiden are No.1. Just following Di'anno recently and am truly disappointed with how sh*t turned out for him. And his douchebag choices.......... |

unfortunatlely? Bruce came back with Adrian, everyone was happy, Brave New World is a great album, their best since SSotSS. As for Virtual XI, it's weak from any view point if you ask me. X Factor was great, Virtual was a disaster.  |

Just spinning Virtual XI and loving every bit of it..... Weak from a 'progressive' viewpoint, but actually a kick-ass, Rockin' album. Nothing overly complex, but some involved pieces. Many that Bayley had his heart in.
I think that Steve made the brutal decision of booting Blaze out, unfortunately as Brave New World featured some material the band worked on immediately after Virtual XI........ |

I like the first two Maiden albums, esecially Killers. Di'anno was not the great singer Bruce is, but his voice worked well enough with that early material.

^ yeah. Hugues, we all choose our paths..........what direction is up to us.........it just devastates me to see Paul in his chair, trying to impress his fans, and knowing what dumb choices he's made, and the fact that he milks his few years with Harris and the boys for his remaining lifetime. It really breaks my heart. I 'love' Di'anno, he was simply AWESOME on those first few MAIDEN releases. So much for the adage of 'it's never too late'..............
As for dear Blaze...................... I loved Maiden since my teen years.... Killers, S/T, Powerslave, Piece Of Mind etc (1987............) .........and now with the chance of having seen the live performance, I just think of the various 'possible' outcomes the band could've had. f**k I obsess over The X Factor, and how Blaze really made that one work. I know there was no future for Maiden had he stayed on, and Steve realised that, so he gave Blaze his marching orders............ I am just so sad for Paul................for what 'could've been'................ |

Well Di'Anno was always a problem, which is why he got sacked by the rest of the band, I think. Most likely this sacking was certainly responsible for a few nails in his future coffin. Di'Anno was more of a punk (and more punky than Johnny Rotten, Simonon or Burnell would ever be) than he was a metalhead, anyways But then again, Maiden has turned out as one of the more solid example of corporate rock as well (along with The Stones), since not many bands have had their own plane Di'Anno for me, but you won't bget me to shed a tear on his destiny. |
