My copy of Rhapsody in Blue (bought in UK by the way) is played by Slovak Philarmonic Orchestra (Bratislava), under conduct of Richard Hayman, and Kathryn Selby on Piano - this is absolutely great 1988 recording. It's released by NAXOS, think you can find it in UK.

You have to listen to Gov't Mule (and guests) version "Afro Blue", it's great!  It's three electric guitar players, bass, saxophone and drums.  Excellent stuff (I've heard two version of it by them actually).

Coltrane's version of "Our Favorite Things" is superb, yet still reminds me of The Sound of Music (grrr!).

I also like John Coltrane by the way, but don't have anything by him.  I have access to a lot of my brother's CDs, so I can borrow his Coltrane!

Anyone familiar with Polar Bear?  My brother has an album of theirs and has seen them live.  They're jazz, but with avant-garde tendencies.  I've not listened to them enough to decide whether they should be here or not, but I rather like them!  My brother heard some of Sotos - Platypus (the quieter, jazzy parts - he left halfway through the album) and said it reminded him of Polar Bear.

Just thought I'd bring them up.

Sorry, I misread your post. You wrote "the album before Bitches Brew" (my italics), but I thought you meant Bitches Brew.

Coltrane is awesome.

I don't know Polar Bear and Sotos, but I have heard about the latter a few times around here.

They play very strange music. Not in a "RIO way" though. It's very minimalistic, repetitive and dreamy. I like it. Kinda "proggy", but not really rock. I voted to include them in Prog Related at most.

The bio on allmusic.com describes their music very strikingly:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biographyby Hank Davis

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra creates dreamlike music. It is beautiful, yet illogical, unpredictable, and often bizarre. Lush violins swirl between classical melodies and country hoedowns. Is that Beethoven or "Walk, Don't Run" they're playing? Is that a touch-tone telephone playing the melody? Yes to all the above, and much more. And don't forget the repetition. Things go on just a little longer than you think they should. Remember Supersax, the jazz group that fully orchestrated Charlie Parker's sax solos and gave them a fuller and richer sound? Well, it's almost as if The Pengies have taken the two-note picking of Luther Perkins (Johnny Cash's guitarist) and taught his repetitive, minimalist picking to a string quartet. The incredible thing is that these are beautiful, compelling records. You may feel as if you dreamed the whole thing, but it is not a nightmare. Probably because no one knows how to classify their music, Penguin Cafe Orchestra is often described as new-age. Until a better label comes along, don't let that put you off. Instead, find a copy of the album called Penguin Cafe Orchestra -- great cover! -- and see what the subconscious mind sounds like when it's given some stringed instruments to play with.

I have no idea. This is my first Gershwin CD, and I haven't even listened to it yet. I actually bought this CD because of Rhapsody In Blue (I heard it a while ago), even though it's not on this CD. It's a Gershwin CD so I thought I'd give it a try. It does contain "I Got Rhythm" though, which is a well-known jazz standard. I think I'll some day buy a CD with Rhapsody In Blue on it as well.

Get "In A Silent Way" as well, while you're at it. I personally like it better than BB, although I must say I have not yet listened to BB as much as I have listened to IASW.

I don't like laid back music per se, but I enjoy some music that could be described as such. LOL

I haven't listened to that album yet. I'm simply getting too much music. The last few days I bought 10 CD's, one by each of the following bands/artists: Fantômas, Sigur Rós, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Erik Satie, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Gershwin, Sonny Clark, Miles Davis and Zaar. Of those, I have only listened to Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Satie. Both very nice, although very different. LOL

Some news from me:

Last Wednesday I went to Rotterdam. In the local record store I found two interesting CD's (second hand): Fantômas' "The Director's Cut" for only € 6,50, and Zaar's only album for € 5,- ! I had only heard some snippets from Zaar, but I decided to buy the CD anyway, because of its low price.

That night I went to John Zorn and Acoustic Masada with a friend (more specifically: a female friend - yes, they really exist: women who like avant-garde music! Tongue). It was an amazing concert. Of course I already knew what John Zorn was capable of, but he still managed to surprise me. Some of his playing was absolutely stunning! Joey Baron (drums) was also very impressive. He even gave a few headbutts a la Zidane (no kidding). LOL The only minor point was that the concert was so short: only one hour and 20 minutes. But hey, I'm not complaining... Amazing show! Clap

Indonesian (repeat Indonesian) RIO/avant band called Discus. I just bought their first album called "1st" and it's playing right now. Anyone who is familiar with this band and this particular album is welcome with his/her comments about them.

I only have their "...Tot Licht!" album. I think it's alright, but I don't like it so much; I find it a bit boring.

From some of your descriptions I am definately going to have to looking into a few more of them. Also on your recommendation I will definately spend some time trying to track down 'Jose Luis Fernandez Ledesma's Sol Central'

Here is a little information I found about one of the bands.

L'Ensemble Rayé

home page, with samples L'Ensemble Raye

From the sample this band seems to be a bit of a mixed, in both sound and quality.

There are numerous sound sample on their home page which is above. Folk influence are abundant mainly present via acoustic measures, think of the influences present in Alamaailman Vasarat thought dumb the intensity down ten fold. Not really my style, amusing for a little while but then can become quite testing. But check them out for yourselves.

So I was having another look through the stock in my store and there has been a new 2nd Hand item coming into stock and I am wondering if anybody knows anything about the band.

The band is and this is how my store describe them:

AFRIRAMPO "Explosive girl duo from Osaka, with ties to Boredoms & Acid Mothers Temple."

The mention of the formentioned bands drew my interest. They have a MySpace page which I am planning to check out when I get back from work.

If anybody can recommend or adivse me to steer clear of them I would find it much appreciated.

You can give Afrirampo a listen but i didn't enjoy tem much. More like a simple rock band IMO. Though they've good reviews and maybe you'll be able to enjoy them more.

About that list
Fukkeduk has the violin player from Cro-Magnon and was produced by Nick Didkovsky from Doctor Nerve.

Rouge Ciel are a canadian band which earned many comparisons to Miriodor.

Yes it does appear the album in discussion was released on Lizard Records. There is very little information on the Lizard Records web page which is translated poorly into english.

They are reasonably newish band, that album is from 1997. But this is their homepage which I though might be of interest to everybody, where you can listen to some sound samples.

Did they release an album on Lizard Records??? I heard only couple of songs by them, and it got me very curious about the band - but either they are very new or very obscure - I failed to find any information about the band.

Oh yes, I have Isotope and LOVE it! Fantastic buy! Really great angular, chattery, and thrashy guitar playing, thundering bass and of course Yoshida's drums.

At least half the groups on Cuneiform struck me, but there was a fantastic song by the group called "Claudia Quintet", as well as some great Henry Cow wanna-bees (Like "Blast"). So much stuff to check out, I don't even know which interest me most yet, I'll have to futhur listen to quite a few - leading into some purchases. I'm sure it'll turn out nicely. Thumbs Up

Well today has been a somewhat successful day inregards to my musical adventures. Meet up with my friend today and I was introduced to yet again another fantastic CD. Also he was kind enough to pick up a Boredoms CD for me while he was up in Sydney.

Korekyojin - Isotope

I find this CD to along the lines of Keiji Haino - New Rap. A little less noisy, and very focused on rythum work. I'm really enjoying this and I'm thinking RP is going to love this one if you don't already have it. There is a fantastic lineup to the CD and it is a live recording in 2004.

Kido Natsuki (guitar) - Bondage Fruit
Nasuno Mitsuru (bass guitar) - Altered States
Yoshida Tatsuya (drums) - Ruins

So much stuff to check out has been listed, I don't even know where to begin!

I spent about an hour today listening to samples of all the artists on Cuneiform records. 90% of them would fit right here in this thread! Check it out guys, I was digging most of what I heard:

Sounds interesting Chris, especially if it that second album has Robert Wyatt on!  I shall look out for that when it's remastered.
