Han Bennink happens to be the brother of saxophonist Peter Bennink, who ran workshops in Arnhem in the 1980s. Peter is briefly mentioned in the Nine Tobs biography (courtesy of Han Buhrs).
Steering away from Germany and focusing on the Netherlands again, I thoroughly recommend any avant-jazz fans check out The Willem Breuker Kollektief. ![]() ![]() Edited by James - September 11 2008 at 09:14 |

I think you mean Rolf Kühn , brother of Joachim (who is more known), both bros studied classical piano, Rolf switched then to Clarinet & sax. Both played mainstream Jazz ,Free Jazz (Rolf played among others with with Albert Mangelsdorff) and Jazz rock
Peter Trunk was an underrated double bassplayer (he is considered by many as the best German DB player), who started with postbop before moving into Free Jazz playing among others with Manfred Schoof and the other artists you mentioned
Albert Mangelsdorff is the most famous German trombone player. he started after the war playing in mainstream big bands, moved then into Free Jazz among others with Alexander Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra and Peter Brötzmann and took part also in the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble
Peter Herbolzheimer (trombone & arranger) is mainly known for his Rhythm Combination and Brass (RB&C), which he formed in 1966 , good mainstream big band jazz.
Dieter Reith (piano and organ) played in the mainstream field like Herbolzheimer with whom he played a lot
BTW Han Bennink and Peter Brötzmann are far more into AvantGarde Jazz

Has anyone heard Zs' new EP? I'm interested and it's super cheap on eMusic.
What about Circulations by Pierre-yves Macé? I wasn't particularly impressed by his debut on Tzadik on my first listen, but I hear that one is better.
They're too repetitive and I find the writing more than a bit dull. It's like they're trying to write pop/rock, but are making everything dissonant instead of consonant. Edited by Henry Plainview - September 11 2008 at 00:44 |

Why don't I like Thinking Plague? Like you said, I just don't like their style. |

I agree with that sentiment, though I haven't heard all RIO/Avant Prog, of course. I need to hear Thinking Plague; I haven't required any of their stuff yet. |

anybody have any commentaries on some of the earliest avant-garde progressive jazz musicians from Germany?
Like Rolf Kuhh, Peter Trunk, Peter Herbolzheimer, Dieter Reith, Albert Mangelsdorff, etc?

There's a 30 second version of Dedicated on there, without any vocals, if memory serves. I have The Keith Tippett Group's first album too and it's just as excellent. For anyone interested in Nucleus, you should all try and listen to some Graham Collier Sextet, which features John Marshall, Karl Jenkins and a few others. It was, and the album features a stellar line up of (at the time) past, present and future Soft Machine members. I haven't heard it in yonks, though, and I can't remember if a version of the Soft Machine song is actually on the album or not.

Yes it was. It was written by Hugh Hopper. However, Robert Wyatt guests on The Keith Tippett Group's album Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening and of course, Tippett guested on King Crimson and Soft Machine albums and live performances. Tippett was on Lizard, for example. Tippett's project Centipede features all of Soft Machine and was produced by Robert Fripp and also featured Mel Collins I think... or did it? I forget... but I think Lyn Dobson was on it and he's guested with Krimson. So Tippett was just giving a nod to his friends in Soft Machine. Oh and Elton Dean was also a guest on it. |

Hmmm, well I've heard both albums and they're excellent, especially the former. I'd say Keith Tippett's later albums, such as Blueprints and his Centipede and Ovary Lodge projects are more avant-garde... not so much fusion though. As for the latter, I'd have to give it another listen. |

Not at all. I like their most recent one. It's mostly their debut I'm not overwhelmed by. |
