I haven't been a fan of Haken in general - but the new stuff sounds promising. Enjoyed the songs.

^ Haken you say? Man, I'm behind there. I still haven't listened to Visions.
Gotta get on that.
Also, as we know JL gave it everything he got on AWAKE album in 1994 where he damaged his vocal chords severely and what's worse he got food poisoning, so he was puking a lot and that made matters so much worse. I will say still to this day, that the AWAKE album is his best vocal performance. The guy nailed it big time. He still sounds great today. Actually, on ADTOE is the best he has sounded in years! Vocally, systematic Chaos and Black Clouds were not his strongest moments behind a microphone. I don't like it when he tries super-hard to sing heavy. He sounds a little like Dave Mustaine and it drives me nuts. This is a big reason why I'm not a huge fan of his solo works, but I will say Elements Of Persuasion was a decent album. :)

Like mentioned before, it's the first single so it's probably not the proggiest song on the album.
Additionally, his voice is better than the 90's because then he tried overreaching notes and such and when LaBrie hits high notes - i cringe. His voice sounds best like it does here, and the majority on the last album. Unfortunately the 90's reference was to the music. It's dated and typical - but oh well. Haken's new material sounds great :D

^ yeah sorry I miss read. Too much excitement. I was in a rush.
I gotta say though it's too bad most here are not liking the track, but when On The Backs Of Angels was released a lot of people didnt like that one either and in my opinion it was not one of the better tracks on the album.
Anyway. Sorry for the mis-read.

Neither did I. I think we both said the music is like the 90s, not LaBrie's voice.

^ I'm hearing a lot of negitive hear...you guys are bumming me out!
Just kidding. I'm glad to hear everyone being honest with how they feel and there are some interesting observations being thrown about LaBrie's voice sounding like 90's LaBrie? I say Yay to that!

Did sound boring to me too, pretty standard issue metal melody.

I wasn't too crazy about the vocals myself, but that probably was just because the melody was kind of boring (at least it seemed so only listening once). One thing I liked about the last album was that the melodies were good. Like they actually spent some time on the melodies instead of just throwing something together quick that fit the chord progression. The melody on this one sounds kind of amateurish and generic. Again - only one listen so far, so my opinion might change on further listens, but...

The song isn't really bad i suppose, James isn't trying things vocally that makes him sound like a cat being stepped on. |
Exactly, the one major positive for me - LaBrie singing well within himself, just doing his job. I actually forgot it was he at the mike for a while.
Yeah, sounds very 90s. Hope this is not too representative of the album, but this is the story of their recent work so wouldn't be surprised if it is.

As someone who hated their last album, I actually enjoyed the new song a decent amount.

Don't worry too much about it...its nothing special. The drumming is boring, normal Mangini dbl speed pedals, and quick snare parts. Cymbal playing is not on the Portnoy level, which actually adds character. Singing is blah, keys are blah and yes no sign of Myung. At about 5:00 in I am tired of hearing that drumming already...ughhh! I hear nothing new....too much thrashy type metal, no sign of progmetal, symphonic metal. Actually this is different, seems Petrucci wants to sound like a hard edged Nickleback (did I say that!!?) Solely based on this song.....I have zero excitement for Sept 24th. They are still great musicians but the creativity seems to have vanished and the DT sound is gone. I hope the other 65min are better..... (I read this a few times b4 posting as I thought it was too harsh....but I am fine with it).

It's okay bud - we had the same post. And same thoughts. You're not alone.

I don't think DT sounds "bad"....Bad can still sound good, some have commented on the production. I connected my laptop to my system and it was OK, being of course probably 128k feed, maybe 256, so I will not comment on that...Its an online release, its gonna sound "bad". The biggest thing with this song is there is no magic...again I hope the other 65min have DT magic. And yes they need to be critiqued hard, they are seasoned vets, exceptional musicians. Petrucci and Portnoy created some great stuff together....Penn without Teller would be boring and not worthy of Vegas. I too will get the new album and hope for better..but this ONE song is blah....hopefully I will eat my words Sept 24th.

Oh sh*t. That bad to you huh? I have not listen to the track yet and I won't till I get my hands on the album of course. It's just the way I like to do things, but your critique sounds quite harsh and sadly I can totally understand it being entirely possible of being accurate. :(
A hard-edged NickleBack sounds awfully scary to me. Man, I hope DT ruin my great 2013 streak of killer music releases.
On another note, sorry the track has killed your buzz for the album release date. See....this is why I wait. Lol

I just saw Kings of Leon referenced as doing something different. I think the way for them to do something different is to take lessons from Coltrane, John Zorn, Trey Sprunace, and the really good avant-garde bands. :D

The instrumental parts sound great- the band sounds tight and energetic. But the chorus and verses are awful. The lyrics sound like something from a new Disturbed single. I still have hope for the album though because it looks like it will have some longer compositions.

I can tell my approach to writing and evaluating music has changed a lot in the past year, because I was actually disappointed when the guitar solo started
