Persistent riffs, weird saxophone shots, funky improvisation, and ... cheesy voices (sorry).

^Yeah it's strangely addictive. Flotenmenschen (the bonus track) though is just madness. I've come to adore it, but man when I first heard that, I didn't know whether to laugh, cry or jump out through the window

After the funny Oktober, I'd like to recommend the Bramlaan album : A Loft In A Balloon. It's a double1981 german psych pop Lp, with late kraut's hints. Interesting.

![]() A polit-rock band in the uniquely German tradition, akin to Floh De Cologne, Lokomotive Kreuzberg, Checkpoint Charlie, et al., but with a larger sound, male and female vocals, and a technical progressive edge often close to Grobschnitt musically. Their most ambitious moment was the double album concept work DIE PARISER KOMMUNE, a musical chronicle of the French revolution, handled in a most imaginative manner, from bizarre theatre through to lengthy symphonic progressive tracks. An obscure yet fascinating release. Members of Oktober (working together with people from Schmetterlinge) also acted as the backing band on an album by P.P. Zahl. Their bassist: Kalla Wefel is still active today. Since the demise of the band he has been busy with: Schneewittchen, solo (as lyricist, composer, singer, producer), and guested with Clinch, Angi Domdey, Andreas Wilczek, and numerous other unknowns! His most recent is called DAS BESTE KOMMT JA NOCH ... (TNT-Records) 2002. |

Well spotted, "Krautrock, Cosmic Rock and its Legacy" points out that these doll parts were used on the sleeves of the first five Ohr albums, by Floh de Cologne, Tangerine Dream, Bernd Witthüser, Embryo and Limbus 4.

I've got this one on MP3 and very strange it is too. A sort of atonal ambient like sound, giving a vaguely oriental impression but actually using western instruments like violin, piano, electronic organ, guitar, flute, percussion, cymbals and wordless chanting. I used to find it rather heavy going, but now it seems more relaxing in the way it flows by without leaving any sort of memorable tune or rhythm to mark the passing of time.

More on SAFFRAN :
![]() The five musicians which can be associated with Out of Focus played a progressive rock reminding slightly of Gentle Giant. Regarding their instruments you can find as well flute and sax. But their tracks with flute don't sound folky and the ones with sax don't sound jazz-like. Although their tracks didn't carry away very often, they really knew how to play. Thanks to their single of 1974 Saffran were known with collectors. Yet their LP of 1975 had to remain unreleased, because they couldn't interest a label, then. Now the LP is available on CD including the two tracks of their single. Almost all songs were written by the band apart from 'Eleanor Rigby' which is by Lennon/ McCartney and a text by the medieval poet François Villon which appeared in translation. |
