Without a doubt Pure Reason Revolution.
I was tempted by the mixed reviews of their second album and found that it's one of the most enjoyable listens I've had for a long time. The critisisms of this albums make me think that quite a number of people seem to be stick-in-the-muds. You can shake your booty to quite a lot of this stuff, and serious minded proggers don't like that.
Additionally, I really can't recall anything sounding quite like it, so in my interpretation of the word, this album is prog.
Then I got their first album as well, but, although very good, I like the second one much better.
Kudos on flying in the face of Progity with such conviction

Last years biggest were Unexpect, Beardfish, Dissillusion, Arcturus. That´s pretty much it I think. I was a bit lazy last regarding music last year. This year I´m of to a better start having finally entered the RPI land :)

In 2009 I really "discovered" Phideaux, and I love Doomsday Afternoon and Number 7 very much, (where is tthe album 7 and a half, Phideaux..., it was promised a long time ago...), this year (2010) the greatest discovery is Big Big Train (The Underfall Yard) but the year is still young...

So far for this year (2010) it would have to be Amplifier, The Pineapple Thief and Pure Reason Revolution.

So far, it's Yes, Supertramp, Peter Gabriel, Moody Blues, and ELP. Courtesy of my local library.

And my favourite discovery of this year Elend

Sunn O))) is not prog in my opinoin. It's different, but that doesn't make it progressive. It's just mindless drone metal. I'm definitely with you on Elend and Krautrock, those are two big discoveries I have made this year too!

Best discovery musically for me in this year was Chicago blues. More specifically, Albert King. His style of playing is wonderful to me. His music is what I thought and hoped blues could be when I first decided to explore the genre.
Prog-wise, my best discoveries came about two years ago with Pain of Salvation and Evergrey. Love them!
With regards to the more recent discussion, I also enjoy Faith No More

The first several FNM albums are awesome, but no way would I ever call them grunge!

Your just now discovering Pearl Jam? Have you been under a Prog Tree eating apples or something? Perhaps a Prog den hybernating to the sounds of VDGG? or maybe it was a rock... Haha, seriously though, I'm a huge fan of PJ. Although I've never understood the "greatness" of Nirvana and Sound Garden (namely Chris Cornell) I think they both stink to our biblical heavan... to be perfectly honest. My greatest discoveries this year (and there have been many discoveries) Opeth (Yeah I know... I need to get with the times) Anathema World's End Girlfriend Arcturus Tiamat (not prog) I also think I should honorably mention Deftones, even though I don't think much of them so far, I can sense it becoming a big thing. My girlfriend tried to get me into their album "Saturday Night Wrist" and I'm starting to really like it. |
The best bands from the so bad called "grunge" (perhaps a chocolate mark? ) scene were:
ALICE IN CHAINS
FAITH NO MORE
The most original bands amongst that bunch of disoriented emos...
The only name I can remember now clearly from my discoveries is DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA: Amazing swedish!
But I must say that I have listened many interesting albums this year.
By the way...What the hell is making Cornell singing popsongs now?
