I never understood what people found so special about Scar Symmetry. Pretty generic melodic Swedish death metal/ metal ( of the most polished kind. Where´s the bite? Where´s the edge?). It´s allright but really! I´ve heard so many band´s playing this style and they don´t really stand out as something special to my ears. Taste is taste of course.

Not prog, but Scar Symmetry have a new album on the way this year, which is awesome because they released on last year too. Probably my favorite modern melodic death metal band right now, so I'm seriously looking forward to this one as well.

Clap
Holographic Universe was one of my favorite albums of last year.

Yep. Anyone interested in technical/ progressive death metal with a unique sound should definitely check out that album.

Anyway....

Check out this band called Vortice, they kinda remind me of Meshuggah.

Their album "Human Engine" is superb and I highly recommend it.

There hasn´t been much interest in the last couple of weeks, but hopefully that´s come to an end nowTongue. Anyone´s listened to this album yet?:

Tholus - Constant

I found it for $12 through GEM. Really interested progressive death metal album. Dave Murray - Drums, Vocals (Estradasphere, Sculptured, Deserts of Traun. All three acts are already present on PA) is involved in the project.

Constant cover (Click to see larger picture)

Was able to get my hands on this...what a gem! ClapClapClapClapClap

Thanks for the recommendation!

I also added them to the PMT chart, they would fit perfectly in Tech/Extreme.

Yes indeed, can't waid for the Great Misdirect. Only six songs on the album, so it should be in the same format of Colors. Even if they simply rehash Colors it should be excellent.

I think it's great and has some wonderful melodic parts, though compared to the masterpiece that Colors is it's just alright. Anybody else?

It isn't discussed cos it's 2009 now, lol.
If you ever went to the SMNnew.com forum board, there was a million threads about Alaska, so pretty much everything that could have been said about it has been said really, even if not said at this forum.

Any fans of Pan.Thy.Monium over here? really good band avant-death band fronted by Edge of Sanity's Dan Swano, some really cool and unusal saxophone parts and a wonderful 20 minute epic.

Yes, Pan.Thy.Monium were WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME.  Swano is great!

Blut Aus Nord are a favorite of mine....
check out also Axis Of Perdition... they are influenced by dark horror and industrial and the Silent Hill series... very dark stuff... some of the best!

Yeah wrong thread, but I'll still help. I LOVE Riverside and think that they are certainly suitable for non metal fans (they always should have been in Heavy Prog IMO). For me their best is their debut which is almost a complete Floyd rip off but I still love it, and then their second. I didn't quite care for their new one to be honest, it lacked the same emotional depth.

In any event, the progressive/avant-garde black metal genre has been growing on me for quite a while and need more stuff of that kind.

Yeah but it's a fairly obscure band to be an obsessed fanboy about so there has to be SOME reason why I gravitate towards this particular group... Wink

It's the fact that they are more obscure (well no longer in the metal underground.... it is sort of trendy to hate them) that makes them that much more attractive to me.  I am an obsessed fanboy of DSO myself... best black metal band in the last 5 years or so.... easily.

On a side note, if anyone is a fan of Gnaw Their Tongues (hopefully you are if you enjoy anything dark musically), you would do well to check out his side-project, De Magia Veterum, a chaotic, raw, technical black metal project that is just killer!

For non-prog metal fans I would purchase their two first before the two latest. There you´ll find most of the Marillion influences that everyone is talking about.

Evening folks

I have one quick question...

Is the latest Riverside album (Anno Domini High Definition) worth a buy for a non-prog metal fan?

I've heard nothing but great things about this album, but I generally steer clear of metal.

Thankyou in advance
-Joel.

I am currently listening to the new Suffocation album. This is far from being innovating music but this sounds incredibly cathartic and should appeal to prog afficionados.

^ Yup!

Holy f*cking sh*t! Last night I listened to Deathspell Omega's Chaining the Katechon for the first time in maybe 6 months. HOLY F*CKING SH*T!!! That piece of music is just... awwwwwwww... it's just... amazing! It was written by God and sponsered by Satan! Why it's not as famous as Mozart's compositions I don't understand because it as the same level if not greater! There's a reason why it has a perfect rating on this site (albiet only two ratings...)!
