Okay, after last night's Lazland debut on the radio on the wonderful Progzilla.com The Progressive Rock Show with Graham Harfleet, the host, and Caron Jones, we are back to business as usual. You can still listen to the show if you take yourselves over to Progzilla.

The Video of the Week is a new one by Enigmatic Sound Machines featuring Thomas Szirmay of this parish and Jeremie Arrobas, Blindfolded.

Only one news item this week, and that is the sad demise of Night of the Prog.

There is a new album review, namely Paradigms by T.A.P., a new collective. This is an instrumental delight and well worth checking out.

As ever, simply head over to www.lazland.org and click on the relevant buttons.

A bit of a left field update today.

In a change from the written word, I will be appearing tomorrow night on The Progressive Rock Show on Progzilla Radio (progzilla.com) hosted by the wonderful Graham Harfleet. Graham, Caron Jones (who, incidentally, is the brother-in-law of Ian Jones of Karnataka), and I spend a wee while talking about three tracks each of us have chosen to represent the classic era of progressive rock, the middle period, and the modern era. All the tracks will be played. Some will be very familiar to you, and some might come as a surprise and be new to you.

The show starts at 8.00 p.m. British Summer Time, and I believe our chat starts at 8.25 p.m.

It was a huge amount of fun to do, so please do pop along and give it a listen. Hopefully, I will be in the chatroom to say hello as well.

thanks, Steve. It is a fine album, and you will love it. Yet another example, BTW, of the freedom I have to review music which doesn't enter PA's radar.

^ Thanks Steve, that's really nice to read. By the way, I have long wanted to make my own website, I know the arts/ creativity site for music, painting, writing, performance arts etc. that I want to make, but it's so much work and a lot to learn, so I would be more inclined to encourage others to follow that dream (I live life quite vicariously). That said, I am more of a collaborative type despite being something of a loner, and I rather like doing things by consensus commonly, and so whatever online project I do I would want to have others really involved.

^^ I don't want to hijack this thread or really draw this out, but Pedro, I'm wondering if you mean that you think that I don't consider folk to be progressive and that is not at all what I was implying. Some folk is more progressive than others, and some folk would sooner be linked to Prog at this site than others. Would you mind explaining and how it fits with my thoughts on Troika (have you listened to the album?) I think you know how much I like progressive folk, acid folk, and acts like ISB, Harper, and folk generally, so I'm confused. I compared Troika to CSNY, and I really like CSN and CSNY too (and do find progressiveness to CSN and CSNY). I think you may have missed the context of what I was saying by focusing on few words, or I just am not getting you in the least.

^^ Greg, as I have said before, I am extremely grateful that the artist submission was turned down. It, and you, gave me the kick up the backside I needed to do what I should have done far earlier, going on my own.

I don’t like being told what to do, which is why my little website is ideal for me. The only person I have to answer to is me, and I will always be grateful for the prompt you gave me.

As for the artist addition policy here, my views are so well known as to hardly bear repeating. PA is what it is. As an archival resource, despite the well known differences, it is still pretty invaluable. I also still love visiting the forum a couple of times a day. The comments I make regarding the additions and sub-genres are designed to be of assistance, but at the end of the day, you and fellow admins are responsible for the site, and I am responsible for Lazland. Long May we live in harmony with each other.Thumbs Up

Hi,

I think this renders folks like Roy Harper, (the early) Incredible String Band, to almost nothing, and Robin Williamson is his later albums as crazy and out of it for his various insane impersonations and fun attitudes in many pieces. yeah, they might still be songs, but the presentation is not even close, and that brings up the next step in "folk" music and where it came from ... POETRY, which both Robin Williamson and Mike Heron have been very clear and specific about their early work ... it just so happened that a bit of the music that ended up with it, sounds like just another song, if you take out the lyrics. But considering EARTH SPAN not "progressive"?

Very scary ... very scary ... means we can not push the boundaries of anything! And that part is the one that scares me the most in an industrialized and commercial society! Art will be dead one day at that rate! And probably prohibited by the power that be ... since most arts are generally very well known to be completely anti-establishment ... but today's music has the sentiment of a lot of stuff that goes down the ... with "lyrics" trying to convince you that it is relevant.

Where does that leave the rest that are very different?
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Regarding D'Virgilio, Morse and Jennings Troika, I would not have expected it in a Prog category as it did not strike me as Prog at all. And while it ended up being evaluated by Prog Related, I voted no because the only Prog relations I found were personnel, but being from a Prog band is not enough for inclusion.

One of the policies for Prog Related is:

"Side projects and solo albums by members of Bands listed in the ProgressiveArchives will only be accepted for Prog Related if a) they cannot be placed in an wholely Prog subgenre and b) the music has some relationship to Progressive Rock/Metal."

"Some relationship" is vague. Troika reminded me of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, which are not in PA. I was not compelled by the case that was presented, was not compelled musically, and do not think it would have been suggested were it not for who was involved. I try to see how many boxes something will tick.

Of course not everyone will agree, and that should be fine, it's not an exact science but there are expectations that I try to observe. I have had ones turned down despite my arguments that i thought were strong, and I thought he music was appropriate. With my last suggestion and addition, it was included, but to another it was not appropriate.

If the next album seems sufficiently a Prog category worthy, I suggest it be suggested again. I think if in doubt, especially with modern one-offs, maybe it is best to see if something comes later that is more appropriate.

And there always are other sites like rateyourmusic to review such albums:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/dvirgilio-morse-and-jennings/troika/

Progressive folk is mentioned as a secondary label there, by the way, but it did not strike me as progressive.

It's a sometimes frustrating thing dealing with accepting and rejecting artists, as people/ teams get complaints from some for both accepting and rejecting artists. Can't please everyone as the saying goes, but hopefully we do our best and people don't hold those differences of opinion against others and can still respect and appreciate the efforts made.

Continuing the recent run of wonderful eclecticism on www.lazland.org tonight I present for your pleasure a review of the wonderful The Blues of Tombstone Dunnery, a classic blues album led by Francis Dunnery, he of It Bites fame. It is a wonderful album and comes highly recommended.

Video of the Week is Anywhere The Wind Blows by D'Virgilio, Morse and Jennings from the forthcoming album "Sophomore" which I am really looking forward to. It was the refusal of Prog Archives to add these three to the site which led to my setting up my website, so they will always have a rather fond place here.

Interesting, Steve, and I know that David will really appreciate those words. It is a very complex album, but repeated listens definitely pay off!

Too old?? Absolutely not, dear chap. Why, old is the new radical!!

Hi Will, thanks for stopping by again!

Ale of the Week is still there, buried in the News Section, but it isn’t updated very often now because the local landlord (who is selling the pub) has not changed the beer on offer a great deal lately.

Hopefully when the new lot come in, this will change.

Thanks for the words re the reviews.

A new album review posted this evening, and it is a fine work. Quadrivium by master guitarist Nick Fletcher, which also features his collaborator, a fine drummer, Anika Nilles, Dave Bainbridge, and Tim Harries.

Well worth a look and read. Simply go to the homepage at www.lazland.org and click on the relevant link.

Finally, Video of the Week is Steven Wilson. Love him or loathe him, he cannot be ignored, and the new album is imminent.

I am hoping to get a couple of new album reviews out this week as well.

As ever, all links are on my homepage.

As ever, thanks for your support, Steve,

In the next couple of weeks, there will be a new interview with Nova Cascade to mark the release of The Navigator.

I would also, BTW, highly recommend Ana Patan’s new one from the same label.
