I'm also going to have to throw a li'l love towards Anneke. Maybe not 'the queen', but, an honorable mention.

Let's say that Prog is a republic, or, better, an academy led by a collective of deans: Rob, Jon, Ian, Fred, the many Steves, etc...

If we have to crown a Queen, my vote goes to the late Lindsay Cooper.

Of course, a living Queen would be better: then, Laurie Anderson.

Hey Tom, indeed epic VdGG track.

Both Keiko and Kyoko are Heart
Saw Ars Nova in pub basement in London in early 2000's, hardly anyone there, superb show. Was at same venue week before seing Vanilla Fudge, and at the end of the show announcer said come back next week to see a Japanese group who look like porn stars and sound like ELP. Intriuged by this sexist comment went back and they were fabulous.
Akiko too !!
Wow !! You saw them. Kyoko is the hottest thing since the sun, and she plays magnificent bass. What a band.

I prefer Annie as a vocalist.  But as a songwriter, Kate Bush is in a league of her own.  I mean, why would she even need to be just a 'queen' of prog as if women always have to run a separate race?  She richly deserves a place among the most original and unique artists in prog and in rock and pop music overall too.

With all seriousness though, I think ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN is right up there with some of the great prog female artists. Also love Tarja Turunen formerly of NIGHTWISH.

My all time favourite female vocalist per se is Christina Scabbia. Not a Prog artist, but it was such a blessing that she appear on the latest Ayreon album. Great performance as 'the mother.'
