Thanks for Dragan! Nice music. Quite original use of accordion which is not rooted in Balkan folk! Clap
Seems like a good, fresh singer/songwriter with clear influence of USA country rock or alt country styles. Uptempo, strong rhythms remind me of Tex Mex giants Los Lobos.
Danceable, with catchy phrases, can be real hit, even in large pop scene.
Recommended for all English speaking audience.
Not for PA, though.

On this huge list there are several rare oddities from the 70s. I will make a list and put it in the "Suggest new bands thread".

I hope to cast the track listings of the three compilations I've bought in august while searching for yugo prog in Istria.

It's a three cds compilation issued in 2000 (over 70 mns each) and is all about the seventies. There are lots of bands and names. Some of the tracks aren't prog, though, even when credited to the big names as Korni Grupa etc...

Some of the tunes seem to be radio and commercial outputs.

You are correct!

PGP was (and still is I guess) a state-run music company notorious for having poor, conservative and uneducated musical editors, usually prefering the cheap mainstream, massively popular music.

However, they had a huge catalogue and licence rights so occassionally they released very interesting stuff.

But, this 3CD collection is obviously hastily assembled by non-experts, even some titles are misspelled, without any style or thematic reasoning as to why these artists are here together, apart from the 1970s timeline.

Still, it can be a good introduction to Yugo music of the period and key names are represented. But key prog tracks are missing, instead they included more commercial stuff from prog bands (Indexi, Korni, Smak...)

All said, I guess it is a useful compilation for first time listeners... Enjoy!

YU GRUPA is a classic rock band from ex YU. Contains elements of hard rock, blues, boogie, Balkan folk and prog rock. Very good band, especially their first three studio albums. Still, I think the prog elements are not sufficient to be considered prog rock, but I know many sites put them into "progressive" category.

DRUGI NACIN self-titled debut (1975) is essential (heavy) prog rock with lots of flute. I know it has been reissued on CD together with only album by NEPOCIN, which is a separate band founded by DN leader I. Kurtovic upon their breaking up in 1977. They play similar style of prog with flute.

How about Yu Grupa? I don't think they're included in this site.

Wow, it's very impressive list of Yugo bands.
I'll try to add a brief note to each of them for explanation (in blue):

Part 1:
Aerodrom - Kad misli mi vrludaju (1979) YUG (good symphonic prog, sounds like YES)
Bebic, Toma - Oya noya (1980) YUG (avant singer/songwriter, humour surreal topics of Dalmatia region, rough voice like Tom Waits)
Bijelo dugme - Dozivjeti stotu (1980) YUG (popular ska/new wave, not interesting for prog)
Bijelo dugme - Uspavanka za Radmilu M (1983) YUG (pop phase of the band, not good)
Bijelo Dugme - sta bi dao da si na mom mjestu (1975) YUG (essential mix of heavy prog rock and so-called "shepherds rock" (Balkan folk influence), recommended for prog listeners)
Boom Pop fest '73 (1973) YUG (all Boom Pop Festivals are highly recommended for prog listeners!)
Boom Pop fest '74 (1974) YUG (all Boom Pop Festivals are highly recommended for prog listeners!)
Boom Pop festival Ljubljana 72 (1972) YUG (all Boom Pop Festivals are highly recommended for prog listeners!)
Buco i Srdjan - Vece je nas prijatelj (1974) YUG (acoustic singer/songwriter duo reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, nice melodic light folk rock)
Buldozer - Izlog jeftinih slatkisa (1980) YUG (good album but not essential to prog, contains diversity of styles from punk to polka to reggae to psyche)
Buldozer - Nevino srce (1983) YUG (the worst album by the band, only for fans)
Buldozer - Noc (1995) (very good "come back" album, recommended, heavy prog moments)
Buldozer - Rok end roul (1981) YUG (nice experiment and/or joke - rockabilly 50s with hilarious lyrics as usual, mini LP, musically not prog)
Buldozer - zivi bili pa vidjeli (1979) YUG (another mini LP, film soundtrack, not essential, for fans)
Cod - Bijeli Bagremi (1978) YUG (a campy pop glam rock group recorded this album which has some prog rock elements, notably the title track)

Shocked
What to say?

How huge this progressive rock scene was!Clap

to be continued...

And lovely lyrics, too. Since it's probably one of the most appreciated prog rock albums from ex-Yugoslavia, I will translate them one of these days. They're worth checking.

I also found translation of another song from that album, "Slovo o covjeku", here it is Smile

Mak Dizdar
A WORD ABOUT MAN

First

Enclosed within a body encased in skin
You dream of heaven's fecund return

Housed in a brain imprisoned in a heart
The sun you revere from this dark cave

Imprisoned in flesh locked up by these bones
How can this space

To heaven be bridged?

Second

Confined in a ribcage captured by silver
In your grandeur no finer than the peasant

Enclosed within a body shut in by skin
You dream that this earth with heaven agrees

Wrenched from heaven bread and wine you desire
But will your dwelling

Your home ever be?

Third

Locked in flesh encaged by bones
These bones your flesh will gore

Wrenched from heaven bread and wine you desire
But stone and smoke are all there are

Of these two hands is one not yours?
The one who wants

The other to kill?

Fourth

Encased in a brain captured in a heart
The sun you call ceaselessly from the dark pit

You dream of heaven drawing nigh
Through blades of grass the body drunkenly swerves

Held fast by roots immersed in blood
In this sorrowful dance

Are you last or first?

Fifth

In that sorrowful dance neither last nor first
You are a gathering for creatures and a playground for worms

Trapped in a body that makes itself a grave
When will the body from its own accord

act?

Hi, I found the translation of "Modra rijeka" title track:

Blue River

by Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar
English translation by Darja Bekan

Nobody knows
Where it is
Little we know
But it’s known

Beyond the mount
Beyond the valley
Beyond seven, beyond eight
And elsewhere,
And crazier,
Through mortal,
Through bitter
Through haw thorn,
Through thorn bush,
Through heat,
Through restraint,
Through suspicion,
Through doubt,
Beyond nine, beyond ten.

Even deeper,
even stronger,
beyond silence,
beyond darkness.
Where roosters
never crow.
Where horn
Can’t be heard.
And elsewhere,
And crazier,
Beyond the reason,
beyond God.

There’s one Blue river.
It’s wide.
It’s deep.
It’s hundred years
Wide and
thousand years deep it is.
Don’t even dream
About its length.
That’s murk and darkness
Full of grieving.

There is one Blue river.

There is one Blue river.

We should cross that river.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Since it is a true poetry, not meant to be sung, I cannot say how accurate the translation is. Poetry translation is the very art as such, me guess...

AND YET ANOTHER TRANSLATION OF THE SAME SONG:

Mak Dizdar
DARK BLUE RIVER

None can say where it is found
We know little but 'tis known

Beyond mountain, beyond valley
Beyond seven, beyond eight

And still sadder and still madder
Over weary, over bitter

Over hawthorn, over thornbush
Over drought and over hindrance

Over dread and over doubt
Beyond nine and beyond ten

There below beneath the earth
Over yonder beneath the sky

And still deeper and still fiercer
Beyond silence, beyond nightfall

Where the roosters do not crow
And the horn's voice is unknown

And still sadder and still madder
Beyond mind and beyond God

For there is a dark blue river
It is broad and it is deep

It is broad one hundred years
A thousand summers is its depth

And its length not to be thought
Murk and darkness unrelenting

For there is a dark blue river

For there is a dark blue river
And that river we must cross

Wow, I was just a few days off this site and what news took place.
Andrea, congrats for your purchase of "Modra rijeka" and "Crna dama", they are both essential prog from YU. Clap

Kalemegdan Disk is a good place to look for these gems, although I never myself bought anything from them (I stick to mp3 format for archival purposes...Embarrassed)

Hear from you later on impressions....
