Republicans don't win votes by appealing to intelligent, well-educated, critical-thinking people. They may well get votes from these people, but they don't pander to them. Then again, these people don't need to be pandered to, they seek out their own answers. Republicans have mastered pandering to ignorance. Democrats are trying to gain ground now (once again, they're too soft-hearted and optimistic and not cynical enough to be ahead of the curve), but it seems they'll be behind until the Republicans f**k up enough for the people to reluctantly elect a Democrat.
I appreciate people who agree with Republicans in ideology, even though Neocons are f**king insane, but these things yelled out at McCain rallies and revealed in interviews with ordinary citizens is apalling. Democrats may have a false sense of superiority, but there is rarely a pride in ignorance with them. We better value intellect sooner, rather than later. |

I really doubt the rise of stupidity can be attributed to the republicans. It runs much deeper than that. Our culture is eroding due to the ease of modern life. Why go to the trouble of being smart if it doesn't afford you any benefits, right? In yesteryear, smarter meant successful. It's not as solid a guarantee nowadays. The same really goes for work ethic as well. Essentially, we've created a world where people can still manage to scrape by with little to no effort on their part.

I don't like it either, which is why I'm not voting.
I'm just saying, I have yet to see any convincing evidence she's a YEC.

my problem is not with Palin to be honest... either was the woman .. she is writer a famous one I guess with a flair for the witty. Her point was...the one we have hit on time and time again.... it is about what it says about McCain's judgement. That is her point.... intellectualism... or gut instincts (or worse.. petty poliics)

micky, to be fair, I have seen a lot of people on the internet that are shockingly elitist, and it's easy for the general Democratic sentiment of "Why can't you be more progressive?" to be interpreted as "Why can't you be better, like us?" There is no evidence that Palin is a young earth creationist. I think it's fascinating that when Palin slips up, people say this shows she is obviously an imbecile, but when Joe says something much worse (FDR on the TV) people shrug it off. It's all about what you want to believe, I guess.People elected Bush because he appeared to be an average guy (although he's really not), but also because Gore screwed up his campaign. Everything he was saying was based on last night's opinion polls, he was so desperate to win he didn't show any character. And his speechwriters screwed him to by writing the long droning speeches. not that anyone's mind will change... and this forum is obviously heavily Obama anyway... but for those who aren't.. a rather eloquent essay as to why we are ....
Many things about the last eight years in America have disturbed me, and one of the most subtle, yet profoundly detrimental, is the rise of anti-intellectualism. It's like being back in junior high, only with a weird secondary adolescence twist where being smart, intellectually curious, and well-informed makes a person a condescending, out-of-touch, latte-sipping elitist. What the heck? In 2000, America kinda-sorta elected the genial C-average guy they wanted to have a beer with over the smart, stiff policy wonk who kept droning on about a lockbox for the whopping budget surplus that's long gone. In 2004, they reelected that guy despite his dismal record, because this time the other guy was from the East Coast, didn't order the right kind of cheese on his Philly beefsteak, and liked to windsurf. That, and some nonsense involving band-aids with purple hearts. Enough, already. Electing a president of the last remaining superpower in the world is a lot more important than electing the junior high prom king. I want the smart guy in charge. I don't want another cowboy filled with steely-eyed resolve, ready to trust his gut instinct. We've had too many guts with lousy instincts in charge. It's time to give the brainiacs a chance. I want the smart guy. I want the guy with the patience to read tedious memos outlining complicated situations in torturous detail, the guy willing to sift through those facts and consult with expert advisors to reach a measured, thoughtful decision. And I'm pretty sure that in this election, Barack Obama is that guy. On issues from the ill-advised Iraq war to the deregulation of the financial industry, his judgment has been proven sound. His policies are aimed at helping the struggling middle class. If nothing else, his VP pick of Joe Biden tells us he's serious. Sure, Joe's on the loquacious side, but he's a well-informed smart guy. Sarah Palin? Please! That gimmick alone is enough to make me mistrust John McCain's judgment. I don't care if she can field-dress a moose. If she were the leader of a rag-tag group of rebels in a post-apocalyptic society that skill might come in handy, but this isn't a Mad Max movie, and I don't want someone who believes that the world was created 6,000 years ago and humans and dinosaurs lived together anywhere near the White House. Does that make me an elitist? I don't think so... but after the past eight years, I don't really care. Being the President of the United States of America is a very, very big responsibility. Let's try putting the smart guys in charge. And let there be latte for all! |

There maybe some underlying principle that guides what we can currently only probabilistically predict by our current knowledge. Some sort of unified theory of everything. However, whenever I meet people who don't believe in particles I feel violent urges :)

Unfortunately I'm a Canadian but since we have a bunch of charltons running in our goofy election I think more people are more tuned in to what's going on stateside. I voted for McCain. Last thing you guys need os an assasination right now. Besides McCain, as an ex-navy pilot and prisoner of war and will get rid of these pesky terrorists. Drop a few nukes on the bums. Whatever it takes. I'm sick of it myself.

http://www.pbs.org/transistor/science/info/quantum.html Albert Einstein disliked this idea. When confronted with the notion that the laws of physics left room for such vagueness he announced: "God does not play dice with the universe." Nevertheless, most physicists today accept the laws of quantum mechanics as an accurate description of the subatomic world. And certainly it was a thorough understanding of these new laws which helped Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley invent the transistor. |

There is no evidence that she is a Young Earth Creationist. What do quantum mechanics have to do with computers?

By creationism, do you mean anyone who thinks God had a hand in the formation of the universe, or just the nutjobs what think he did it with a bunch of spells or whatever and it's only 6000 years old? I mean I'm Christian (sort of, I don't really identify with the religious right)but I believe in evolution, quantum mechanics, relativity and anything else that's been reasonably proven. PS: Btw, the next time you run into a nut on the net the says quantum mechanics is not real, ask him how the hell he's on a computer then. |
