Damn... Peter, I completely forgot about this tune. I haven't listened to the Stranglers in about ten years. Looks like I'll have to get back too 'em.

From Aural Sculptures:

Mad Hatter

He's mad he's mad
He's mad he's mad
You may have read the book
You might have seen the film
But I've seen it with my eyes
Was it tweedle-dum? Was it tweedle-dee?
But Isaw through his disguise
There was a Cheshire cat next to a water rat
And a JuJu awful wise
We were sat to eat now was it trick or treat?
We were in for a surprise
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
He doesn't need a hat He's not crazy eves
And he rolls them round the group
He's got stories tall and a winning smile
As he then surveys his troups
Then he'll about a lot of things
In a song you've never heard
But it sounds so sweet He gets up on his feet
And he's looking for the word
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter
It went on oh quite late as I went through the gate
And I began my journey back
I was glad to know that I'd seen the show
That I'd found a happy jack
Because they're getting rare, we never get our share
Seem to be a dying breed
But they're so much fun Laughter's on the run
As the Hatter plants the seed
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Here comes the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter
Mad as the Mad Hatter

I'm afraid the convention is cancelled - the main speaker is at home re-decorating his hallway through his letter box

Congratulations, Peter - for this very comment alone, you should be inducted to the diplomatic corps

ErmmThere's plenty of evidence to suggest so, Danbo (unripe ones, anyway), but the academic jury is still out on that one.... (I'm inclined to agree with the "yea" side.)

Still, that is not the song I meant. I want an irrefutable Carroll reference from the Stranglers.

Thumbs UpCorrect on both counts, Sir Glass!Clap

(And not just LSD, either.)

An exemplary one, Sir Dan of Bo! Well done!Clap

Now, how about the Stranglers for a Carroll connection?

Jabberwocky

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
  The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
  And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
  And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
  The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
  He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
  He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
  Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.
Lewis Carroll!!!
One of my favs, Sir Peter.

ClapStormcrow was right!Clap

The quoted poem excerpt was by the brilliant Lewis Carrol, and is the first verse of "Jabberwocky," which appears in Through the Looking Glass. It makes sense, of a sort, in its own context.

Geek OK progholes, how many Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass/Lewis Carroll references can you identify in prog, and/or other musicQuestion

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?

SmileHint: I didn't write it, it's well over 100 years old, and the author's real name was Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

Well Mr. Rideout, as the famous Lewis Carroll once wrote:

"Life, what is it but a dream?"

But then he also wrote:

"If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there.".....

The original version of "No matter where you go, there you are."
