Everyone borrows or steals from somebody else when it comes to music, so the statement 'barely any death metal cliches' does not compute.  Yeah, sue me... the new one is boring compared to the debut.  disclaimer:  this is only an opinion.... hence, not debatable.  and I hate to break it to you, but groundbreaking no longer exists in death metal.... it has pretty much all been done.  Like I said, Gorguts did this style better almost a decade ago..... I am glad they are rejuvenated....

I personally think they would be great additions. Very intereresting acts both of them.

the first Ulcerate album is good.... sort of like Gorguts lite.  very dissonant, amazing drumming, some doom parts and overall great songwriting.  the new one, however, was a big let-down (not proggy at all)

Are you serious??? Their new album was fairly groundbreaking as a death metal album. There are barely any death metal cliches within.

i have only heard Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II Dialogue With The Stars, so that album is very good, and it fits PA easily , although it is in fact some atmospheric/symphonic black  but prog influences are visible throughout whole album.. i haven't heard their previous albums

You should see them (Portal) when they perform live, the singer wears a clock on his head!

Blut Aus Nord is only experimental in the albums The Work Which Transforms God -through- Odinist;  the albums before and after that are pretty standard melodic, symphonic black metal.  The ones I mentioned however take a page from the dark ambient, dissonant experimentation of bands like Deathspell Omega... yet they have their own sound... which I very much love!  If we are going to debate putting BAN in the archives, might as well include The Axis Of Perdition:

or even Spektr:

or how about Portal?

Check Quintessence ,ICS Vortex from Dimmu Borgir  is on vocals and pretty descent screams and clean vocals he has , very good album is that. Borknagar -their first album is their most black metal influenced album with Prog hints, Kristoffer ''Garm'' Rygg is on vocals and i suppose you will like it

Garm is on BOTH of the first two albums.... I have only heard 'the olden domain', but I love it.

I personally prefer Borknagar's "the olden domain" with Garm (Arcturus/Ulver etc.) on vocals- better than later material imo...

vintersorg is hit or miss.  the two with Steve DiGiorgio are the best....  "visions from the spiral generator" and "the focusing blur"  they are pretty similar and feature the same guest musicians (if I am not mistaken); and are the best.... well, for my tastes at least.

Never knew Vintersorg was on this site!

Great band! Found them a few months ago. It was 100% random and I found them through surfing youtube.
Also, I've never been the first ever review of an album!
*shameless self gratification*
But really, an amazing band I really consider them prog-metal over anything else.

Props to the site for having them listed! Thumbs Up

I prefer the RIO thread myself.  and you can say I suck, but you have all been duped.  It was a joke...  Jeez, lighten up people.  These are just opinions and jocular actions!  Tongue

but for real, Opeth is not the be-all, end-all of progressive melodic death metal!  tech metal is getting pretty worn out, what with its newfound popularity.... there are still some gems, but it is getting watered down imo.

I think many of you came from a Prog background, to enjoying Opeth, which was probably many of your exposure to metal (extreme?) initially; whereas I came to prog from metal, so Opeth just took a lot of old prog styles and blended them with metal.... but their songwriting is lacking in my opinion...

I don't think anything will beat the Exivious debut for me (well not at least this year.... maybe for any other year as well).

Yes this makes me sound jaded, but after over 2/3 of my life listening to metal, not much new stuff is coming down the pipes...  that's why RIO/Avant stuff is eons more interesting to me, unless it's 12tone or dissonant/experimental metal.... all else is rehashing.

Giving us a hard time for talking about them in this thread is uneccesarily rude.

giving me a hard time about giving you a hard time is unnecessarily rude as well!  Big smile  Coffee Pot meet Kettle!
