I completely forgot about Manfred Mann's Earth Band
ah well. It's done now. I'd probably have put them about 6th.

Love Hawkwind but they're not in my top 10, I like a lot of bands.

Do people here not view them as prog?  Or are they not especially liked by members?
Hawkwind are currently stranded on 28 points, so they're still a long way from making it into the Top 20.

Only two other PA members (Gentle and Giant and Enigmatic) have so far included Hawkwind in their Top 10.

I've given Schlagenheim a new listen, but I must say, it's not exactly my cup of tea - even it can happen that I'm fond of a Math Rock album, like for instance Shellac's at ACTION PARK.

Try Cavalcade, it's very different from Schlagenheim.

The cover and RYM's "Avant-Prog" label don't look promising to me, but I'll give it a listen. Smile

How about the French Taal's Skymind?

Don't know them, off to explore
I wouldn't call Taal an avant band, but I would call them excellent. I have both albums and esteem them highly.

In general there is not enough traffic on this site to delve too heavily into niche so indeed we end up with an endless role of Genesis and Yes polls it seems.
I for one though do appreciate recommendations and checked out the ShamblemathsII album as a result of a thread created about. However if you put your head above the parapet then be prepared for some f**ker to blow it off lol!

I can say the same of the niche of music I listen to. At least some avantheads participate in forum discussions related to the genre, how about the black midi thread?

Many other threads, especially modern prog, get little to no response.

But Grumpy, you can't blame other people for the taste they have.

You can influence others with your taste, but I don't think, you can do it by critism.

Well, I have probably 100+ favorite bands, including experimental/avant-rock bands.....

Thank you very much for your answer. It told me very much and very obviously, easy to understand.

I'm very impressed, as well, so well formulated you write, and so well you explain things, Enigmatic. I'm surely looking forward to your further participating in PA forums.

Well, I have probably 100+ favorite bands, including experimental/avant-rock bands. Every band, even with 1 album in discography but exceptional, unforgettable, life changing gets my vote as favorite.  Unfortunately there is only 10 slots in Top 10 category. Why these particular 10 bands, not others? There are different factors: bands that I know for many years and I never got tired of listening to their music. For each band in my Top 10 - I remember when I heard their music for the first time, which album or track and where that was. I followed their musical journey and couldn't wait for the release of next album. So as you can see - plenty of sentimental values. One quick look at the shelves with my CD collection and I know which are my favorite 10 Progressive-Rock bands, the ones with the most CDs on the shelf. :)
I am pretty picky and choosy. I used to have large collection of CDs, but sold most of them because I rarely listened to them. They were simply gathering the dust. I only kept about 500 CDs which are the most relevant to my taste in music. Just for the record, some of my favorite bands include: Cheer-Accident, This Heat, Camberwell Now, the Residents, Present, Pere Ubu, Egg, Khan, Marsupilami, Gracious, East of Eden, Rare Bird, Gnidrolog, Stormy Six, Picchio dal Pozzo and another 20 RPI bands.

Many other threads, especially modern prog, get little to no response. That is the way of PA, endless talks about what shoes Steve Hackett wore when tracking the guitar solo for "Firth of Fith".

Something else, we're many here who somehow have quite different tastes, or different approaches to all these things.

I love sarcasm, David. Nice one. Thumbs Up

No, Grumpy, it wasn't sarcasm, that doesn't use to be me - even it can happen but not in a situation like this.

If you think of "Happy the Man?", it was another situation, and I was not only sarcastic.
