Pre-ordered already......I'm not a CD guy but I did the big box set due to all the stuff you get. Just the hardback book is probably worth $50, the records are worth $100 so it made sense to me. Most of these deluxe type box sets don't make a lot of sense to me......but hey, it's Rush!!
I am kind of feeling the same way. Not sure I can pull the trigger on the big box set...but I am at least very tempted.

Send me your credit card info, I'll pull the trigger for you.......Thumbs Up

The standard 3CD box will suffice for me. 300 bucks is nuts. You guys can have the enamel pins, metal picks and replica tickets.

Dude!!! You get a Red Barchetta in the deluxe set....WTH man, that itself is worth the price of admission Clap.

Like I said, I'm not one of these deluxe box set buyers. The last one I was thinking of was Prince~Sign O the Times, that one was $300 and came with like 11 records but nothing more really. I did not get it.......Look at the Beatles whackos who spend $500 on those box sets that have been reissued like 100x already. LOL

There are some of these box sets that will never be in print again....but again this is Rush.

For the most part I think lyrics were written first, at least very rough drafts. Music followed by Geddy and Alex and in some rare cases music by Geddy and Neil, maybe just laying down a simple groove. Lyrics were edited based on how Geddy felt about them, he has said many times for him to sing about it he needed to feel it. It seems Neil was very open to adjusting his lyrics to suit Geddy singing them.

Based on all his reading, Neil it seems wrote lyrics whenever......all of the instrumentals they recorded may have been when Neil was having writers cramp. LOL.

Several documentaries detail the writing process, I think they are very open to discussing it. The one that comes to mind is the documentary on Snakes & Arrows recording session......The best thing was that they worked on the album together in the studio, unlike what happens now. Here is the teaser, it's a great watch to understand the intensity of this record.

Usually Neil's lyrics were done, and Geddy & Al wrote the music around them.

In the Signals tourbook, the gist of "Subdivisions" (chords and bridges) was put together, and they took the tape over to Neil (who was washing his car in his driveway at the time) to play for him on a small player. Neil liked the role the synth line took. The drums went on last in the studio, IIRC.

"Chemistry" is a song with lyrical contributions by all three. The song came about during a soundcheck on the Moving Pictures tour. One pre-show jam sounded more interesting to them than the others, and they each developed and refined their respective parts till they had something close to the final version. After the tour, they finished and recorded it.

I'm not entirely sure but I think he wrote the lyrics and Geddy and Alex wrote the music separate from eachother. I don't know which came first. They had some sort of system but I forget the details. Catcher can probably give you a better answer.

With Neil you got the double whammy. Not only was he a great drummer but a great lyricist as well. The guy read a ton (presumably during downtime much of the time). He also travelled a lot (on his motorcyle, on bike or in a car). Just an amazing guy all around imo. The rest of Rush were great musicians too. I always thought it was interesting that Geddy is such a big baseball fan. I think he's a big wine collector too. Alex plays golf but not sure what else. Lol.

It's about the creativity of how they started this tour, you can call it an overture if you like or a preview of what's to come. I am not 100% sure that they played all of the songs they previewed in the opening section.....but it flows so nicely into the start of Spirit of Radio.
These three guys always pushed themselves to be different.

Awesome....

Well, their presentation was certainly different and imo that's where they thought the most outside of the box (well much of Neil's lyrics too). How many bands were putting on costumes and doing little acting skits on a video screen for the fans to see before their concerts? None that I can think of. Or what about having washing machines on stage? Who else would even think of that?

I don't think musicially they ever did much that wasn't done before but to be fair no one did it quite like Rush did that's for sure.
...or chicken roasters LOL And of course all these were in 3's, including back screens.

Rush playing "Armor and Sword" in Irvine on the 2nd leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour. Mother's Day, 2008 : r/rush

Not a "twenty-year span": Different Stages (released in 1998) is taken mainly from the 1997 Test for Echo tour, with three songs from the 1994 Counterparts tour. The third (bonus) disc is their 1978 performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

P.S. I also recommend it. I've enjoyed it since, well, 1998! Wink
