Thinking about it Peter Egan does sound a lot like Patrick Stewart!
I've been notified by Amazon that mines on the way. Looking forward to it. I wonder if it will be better than Emerson's excellent Three Fates Project which I received yesterday. Funny that even after all these years they are still in competition.

My copy was waiting on the doormat when I arrived home from work this evening. On first listen my verdict is that it is very good and the new material fits well within the original score with neither distraction or discontinuity. Along with Ashley Holt, (who does a sterling job on The Battle in reparation for the less than convincing performance he gave on the live album 38 years earlier) the other lead vocalist is Hayley Sanderson who sings the new songs ('Echoes' caught my attention immediately) as well as taking over Gary Pickford-Hopkins songs rather admirably (they sound better pitched for a female voice singing well within her range than an over-reaching male one). Peter Egan does an adequate job as the narrator, though unless you visualise in your mind him reading it, it is very easy to just think it's Patrick Stewart reprising his role on Return.
Wakeman is of course, excellent.
A nice touch in the album credits & thanks is Rick Wakeman has dedicated the album to Jon Lord.

^ It probably will have Ashley Holt on vocals as the album features the current line-up of the English Rock Ensemble.

I also liked his Retro albums. However, I must admit that at least for me, it sounded very fresh and "new", it didn't quiet have the 70's feel, but I don't mean that in a bad way. As a matter of fact, I would wonder what need is there for new instruments, if he can do all those beautiful sounds with the old ones.

^ I like his retro albums where he does use a lot of vintage instruments but I know what you mean. Hard to get the same sound he had up to and inc Criminal Record. But I believe it is possible to do a smart recording that is enjoyable to listen to. Also I was never that happy with the original recording so I'm definitely looking forward to something that at least has more dynamics and brings out the unique grandeur of a full symphony orchestra.

For me to be interested in this, I would want an upfront promise of vintage instruments and recording equipment. There is something about Rick Wakeman playing digital synthesizers and recorded in digital crispness that loses all of the majesty and mystery of his music.

The original always bothered me a bit, so I guess this is a wonderful oppurtunity to get the Journey

There was a studio version on a lot of greatest hits, around 30 minutes long, no narration. It's pretty good. I always loved the original live CD. Very good. There's an alternate live one too.
I liked the story telling part of the album too. I thought the narrator was terrific. He was a famous actor in the 60s and died young, so he won't be on this new one.

We already discussed this if you read the thread, and David Hemmings didn't die so very young.

Well, ELP did their version of Pictures at an Ex. in the studio and while I think it had an excellent sound stage, I was disappointed that they didn't expand it a bit with more solo's and the Blues jam.
As for Wakeman, I'll be interested to see how close to the original the performance energy is. Played live, like Pictures at an Ex., these works are almost always more fun for me to listen to.
So out of curiosity, who else has done an album of material only as a live release and you think should take a studio production approach to?

Rick's Perspective |
Notes |
I despise this album in every respect. The master tapes of the back tracks were taken to America and appalling vocals put on them without my approval. The final result was also then sold without my approval and without my receiving a penny. The master tapes were never even returned to me. the album is a disgrace. |
Wakey's Verdict |
If you buy it, don't expect me ever to autograph it. |
Little Known Trivia |
When I contacted the original company in America who had illegally purchased it I was threatened with not just violence but that I would "mysteriously disappear" if I interfered any more and I was never to expect one penny or my masters back.
addendum……Even though this album keeps appearing on different labels PLEASE don't buy it I beg of you!!!!! | |
(I've just ordered it from Amazon - more reason for Rick to scowl at me next time I get an album signed at a gig )

From Rick's Blog (Grumpy Old Rick's Ramblings):
July, 2012 wrote:
That’s the first piece of news, and the second is that we have the green light to move ahead with the recording of the new extended version of Journey to the Centre of the Earth.
It will be the entire original re-recorded but with the same orchestration, plus two new songs and extended music, solos and narration, making it the one hour composition it was always meant to be.
Recording starts almost immediately. New orchestration will be done by Guy Protheroe and Ann Manly and Guy will also conduct the orchestra and English Chamber Choir. The band will be the current line-up of the English Rock Ensemble. What is also quite exciting is that at many stages along the way, we will be broadcasting live from the various studios and when these will actually be will be decided as soon as the schedule is put to bed in a week or so and the RWCC site will be the first to print these times.
These broadcasts will include some of the initial pre-recording work including interviews with myself and Guy as to how the orchestration will be done and also live visits to the studio whilst the band are recording and also for overdubs, some of my solo work over the tracks, a visit during the orchestral recording and the choir as well.
This means that those interested can follow the progress almost from the beginning right through to its completion. The album will be completed by the end of September and the new orchestrations will go immediately to South America where the first live performances will take place in the last two weeks of November and maybe into December as well. |
August, 2012 wrote:
............and so, starting with Journey to the Centre of the Earth, it is now well into production. The musical template for the new 52 minute version is complete and the orchestrations are being done as I write the GORR and will be completed by the end of the month.

September, 2012 wrote:
Journey to the Centre of the Earth is nearing completion. All the vocals are finished and the narration and all the band parts and 99% of the keyboard parts. We start recording the choir and orchestra in early September and with a modicum of good fortune the whole project should be mixed by the end of the month. It is far and away the most exciting work I’ve been involved with for many a long year. |
October, 2012 wrote:
What a momentous month September was with the completion of Journey to the Centre of the Earth and organising its very special release in time for Christmas in association with Future Publishing, who of course have all the major music magazines such as Classic Rock and Prog Mag.
Journey will appear as one of their very special “fanpacks” and will arrive in over 1,900 stores in the UK prior to Xmas and will have with it, a 132 page magazine/book which will be packed with stuff about the album plus pictures and interviews never before seen.
There will also be the complete history of the Journey from its outset plus interviews with many of those who participated in its making. |
So there you have it from the horse's mouth - a completely brand new studio recording with new-bits.
I've ordered my copy without site connection problems.
