I won't list all of my favorites because that would get redundant but Steve Harris is fantastic and so is Jonas Reingold. Pete Trewavas had a phenomenal performance on The Whirlwind.

I always thought Rutherford was one of the best. Certainly has some of the
most tasteful playing, and melodic. He really puts a voice into the music, not just a foundation. |

I checked the thread twice and can't believe that no one listed Hadrien Feraud.

Personally I like John McVie; to me he is the most inventive and lyrical.

My favorite bass player is grossely overlooked and alot of people here might not even know who he is.
It's Steve Borrill of Spirogyra, I don't think there has been any other bass player that has been able to mix a fast rock bass as well as he has with folk music. As a bass player that tries to write folk music, he is a big influence for me, and I really try to learn as much as I can from his playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkSFlJubQU8&feature=related - The bass part starts at 5:35, typical Steve Borrill style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1jNLR9tjXE - Here it starts at 2:42 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU8qPFQ8LNI&feature=related - The bass is amazing troughtout the whole song. He might not the fastest or the most technical player, but he sure knows how to enhance their music with his bass playing. I hope this helps people to discover him, I feel that he has easily even be overlooked when listening to Spirogyra, but once you really start looking for him. You will find start slowly understanding how big the bass was in Spirogyras music.

No-one to name Helmut Hattler or Colin Hodgkinson?
Helmut Hattler: Colin Hodgkinson: Ok, so Hattler is German; whoever knows of him? But Hodgkinson is British and a bass guitar legend! |

And of course the bass player for The Doors. I would also like to nominate Les Claypool. Edited by Slartibartfast - April 24 2011 at 07:46 |

Hard one again! There are so many terrific bass players, but let's try.
Tony Levin followed by bunch including Jonas Hellborg, Pekka Pohjola, John Entwhistle, Jonas Reingold, Jannick Top, Bernard Paganotti, Chris Squire, John Wetton, Richard Sinclair. And I love Marcus Miller playing + S.M.V. Edited by akaBona - April 26 2011 at 06:36 |

I love melodic, distinctive, trebled bass, usually when it is combied with great technique so Chris Squire, Geddy Lee are my top favorites, then John Wetton, Pete Trewavas (mainly in Transatlantic), Dave Meros, Jonas Reingold and even Paul McCartney come close
