Topic: Mastodon Posted: December 07 2009 at 20:25 |
Mastodon is my one and only prog metal exception. I wouldn't really say they cop out musically with the overuse of screams, more of just gruff vocals. Crack the Skye might be my favorite metal album (well, really one of the only on regular rotation)

I saw Mastodon a while back at Leeds and i was massively unimpressed! As a result i haven't listened to them since. Now i have some free time ill see if i can get into them, maybe starting with Leviathan...

I really didn't get them at first. Which is weird, because it's not as if I'm unused to screaming prog metal, Opeth being one of my top bands. But then I heard 'Crack the Skye'. A great record. I even find myself liking their previous stuff more now. Mastodon are clearly one of the forerunners in the scene at the moment. Dream Theater and even Opeth should watch their backs carefully.

So, Mastodon is a band I have never gotten into. I always thought they were just another screaming metal prog band (and I do not mean for that to sound derogatory). And now I listen to their new song Oblivion, and I am blown away. Instead of screaming, there are tons of clean vocals, even a lottle harmonizing, mixed with beautifully intricate and melodic instrumentation. What happened? Somewhere this band changed. Is it just the new album? I'm definitely getting it after hearing that amazing song.

same here, never liked them before "Crack the Skye", but now it's my FAVOURITEST RELEASE FROM 2009 ![](smileys/smiley32.gif) with "Oblivion" being my favouritest track

All the hype about the latest Mastodon offering made me try it and I found something best described as the Mars Volta with a dose of...(I don't know). Then I moved on to "Blood Mountain" and discover who? Cedric Bixler-Zavala! Was I surprised? No!

Not that I'm trying to influence you or anything, but anything less that a 4.5 will be punishable by something, well, erm, extremely nasty I haven't thought of yet ![Tongue Tongue](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif)

I'm still debating whether or not I should give Crack the Skye the honor of a 5 star album or not...

^f**king hell, Converge and Mastodon at one show, enough to cream yourself 10 times over really. Man I'm glad I took your suggestion to listen to Converge, Chris, they've quickly shot up to be one of the most inspiring bands I've ever heard

Yes, I'm really looking forward to seeing them and Converge (and Dethklok). What a show that's going to be.

Yep, I totally agree. I've got high hopes for the new Porcupine Tree album though....but that's irrelevant. I love all of Mastodon's stuff, but CtS is just on a whole different planet.

Yeah, after hearing "Crack the Sky"I'm definitely thinking about seeing them with Dethklok. I think CtS may be the best CD I've heard so far this year. It is just amazing.

I love everything Mastodon has done and Crack The Skye is an interesting chapter in the progression and growth of this band, who I consider one of the most important prog metal bands of this decade.
The new vocal style was a pleasant surprise. The only thing about the album that disappointed me was that drummer extraordinaire Brann Dailor toned things down a bit.
I don't know if the changes in the bands sound will continue on whatever album they release after CtS,but I like them either way,so it doesn't matter, |
Its saying something when Dailor can tone things down and still blow most drummers away. This is a band that gets better with every album, but I must be one of the few that think Blood Mountain is better than Leviathan.

I'm seeing them on the tour with Dethklok too.
Saw both bands live on their last tours and both were excellent.

I enjoy what I've heard from Mastodon so far. I've only listened to "Crack the Skye" but I found it to be excellent and I'm interested in checking out the rest of their work.
They are coming to town to play with Dethklok in a few months, so that should be an interesting show.

Ah yes, much love for Remission as well. March of the Fire Ants was the first mastodon song I ever heard and my jaw hit the floor. I didn't know anyone made music that heavy. |
First song I heard from them too. When Remission came out a friend of mine who is a very accomplished drummer said to me...."Dude,you gotta hear this new band Mastodon.Their drummer is f**kin SICK!!!!!"
