Mick Deacon (The Greatest Show On Earth) I forgot to put him in my list, it was very late when I was making the list.
Mick could possibly kick half of my list by outplaying them on all aspects... he's one of the most underrated organists ever, sadly.

Well, I'm hooked. As if I didn't have enough reasons to love Munchen already. Which album should I start with? |

How did I miss this post?
My friends, Emerson is the original prog rock keyboard player.
After that, well you pick 'em.

I love the Hammond (my favourite instrument) the organs sounds just as good and fresh today, I've tried to play on a Clavia Nord C1 and it simulates an organ superb... check it out!
So here goes my top list of my Hammond Gods:
1. Keith Emerson (ELP, The Nice) = There can be only one! + no one stabs it better... with knives!
2. Jon Lord (Deep Purple) = Ranked high because of his high rocking solos and intros.
3. Jean-Jacques Kravetz (Frumpy) = Just as talented as Emerson, not as famous... not as crazy!
4. Vincent Crane (Atomic Rooster, Crazy World OF Arthur Brown) = One of my all time favourites, I bet he's rocking in heaven right now while I'm typing, RIP.
5. Graham Field (Rare Bird, Fields) = One word: Underrated! (give Rare Birds 2 first albums a listen).
6. Peter Bardens (Camel)
7. Thijs Van Leer (Focus)
8. Alan Park (Beggars Opera)
9. Manfred Wieczorke (Eloy)
10. Jürgen Fritz (Triumvirat)
* Only writing reasons on the 5 first musicians since I'm tired and it's almost 4 AM here *YAWN*

Not a bad list but Doug Ingle wasn't playing Hammond (nor was Hugh Banton or Ray Manzarek)

In all seriousness, Jon Lord is one of my favorites, mostly because of his tone. His heavy, dirty sound aggressively leaps to the front, and allows the organ to be used for faster rhythm playing with great results.
Keith Emerson is also another one of my favorites. |

Keith Emerson would have to number one for me in rock organists (it was him who was called the "Hendrix of the Hammond" after all, not Jon Lord as someone suggested earlier).
Here is a fantastic bit of Hammond playing from an old UK TV programme. Not technically dazzling but sums up everything about why I love the instrument. Sheer power and drama!

Probably what you wrote is true. But it's really interesting inclusion of Hammond in this type of music. So yes, I must admit that Lars Nedland is a sort of Hammond God! |

While he's probably not a "Hammond God" exactly, I personally really like the way Lars Nedland uses the Hammond in Borknagar (and Solefald). Very interesting to hear a Hammond in extreme prog metal, and he pulls it off well IMO.

Since Jean was the only one to mention her so far: Barbara Dennerlein! She is the only one who plays independent lines with the bass pedals; even Jimmy Smith didn't do that. He used the bass pedals, but not for independent lines.
If you don't believe Barbara Dennerlein is a Hammond Goddess, check out these videos: http://tinyurl.com/yarswe http://tinyurl.com/5r83yl http://tinyurl.com/5r83yl http://tinyurl.com/3sawpf http://tinyurl.com/4ta2dn And here a one hour concert of her on church organ, where she uses the pedals with both feet: http://tinyurl.com/4gcu3g Edited by BaldFriede - October 07 2008 at 09:49 |
