I don't think they're underrated, but I DO think they're not as well known as they should be. It's just amazing how one band can go from making dark depressing doom metal to songs like Everything, which is one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. I can't wait for the next album.

Jup.. here's another fan. Can't wait to hear their new album. Love their experiments with various styles.

From the official website: www.anathema.ws

"Greetings to all…

We have taken all of our recording equipment to a house in England where we have built a studio and begun the first of two records to be released this year. The recording has been going very well.

This first record is a semi-acoustic recording of many of our most loved older tracks. This will be released on Peaceville records. The working title is ‘temporary peace.’

The songs to be included on ‘temporary peace’ are:

Angelica, leave no trace, inner silence, one last goodbye, are you there, fragile dreams, a natural disaster, temporary peace and flying.

The record will be a substantial work, arranged by Danny and performed and produced by the band, recorded and engineered by our own Les Smith, who was responsible for the recordings of ‘everything’ and the other new songs released online last year.

This will also feature the cello of Dave Wesling, who previously toured with Vincent and Danny in 2004 and is featured on the DVD ‘a moment in time.’

It may also include a reworking of one or two classic tracks from the very early days of anathema.

In late winter/early spring, immediately following the recording of this semi-acoustic album, we will enter a studio to record the next full length anathema album, which be produced by Anathema and mixed by Steven Wilson, independently from a record company.

Upon completion, the new album will be licensed around the world, giving us artistic and creative control and keeping the rights to the music in our own hands.

All being well, you will see the release of two records from anathema this year. A semi acoustic classic tracks album, and a full length new album.

Then touring…

Best wishes to all,

Anathema"

Bravo!  It's often as good a criterion as any.  Let us know what you think of them.

Might get more from this band, any recommendations?

A Fine Day to Exit (2001) and A Natural Disaster (2003) further develop the new style first established on Judgement, and most befit the Radiohead/Pink Floyd comparisons.  They're the natural recommendation to a fellow prog rocker.

Will check them out sometime!
Those two are amongst the cheaper ones! Big%20smile

I actually think they're overrated... I just can't get into their music... believe I'm tried... not a bad band but nothing extraordinaire

I have every album by this band and love them all. Especially "Serenades" and "A Natural Disaster". Looking forward to the newest one, also!

Then problem with Anathema is that people aren't use to hear bands that don't have a very familiar sound. Anathema do things diferently in every album making new people like them and other people hate it. In my opinion Anathema is a great band that offers something unique by makes every album have a diferent and unique sound. As for me Judgment it's  my favorite followed by Alternative 4.

I don't find them underrated at all, they are very much appreciated, especially in TURKEY where they are very very big.

Presuming that it's true, that's very welcome news indeed.  They are a fine band, and it's a shame they aren't more widely appreciated.  I've always felt that one of Anathema's problems (commercially, not artistically) was that they couldn't be easily pigeonholed into a single genre niche.

check out yet another new song "Hindsight" from the upcoming album performed live on the following links (different versions):

Personally i really liked alot, somehow it reminded me of Dark Side of the Moon-era of Pink Floyd, & i can also feel a little bit of "Judgement" in there (say 2000 & gone?)

your thoughts?

Anyone see them supporting Porcupine Tree? 'A Natural Disaster' was perfect!

love Anathema, Judgement, Alternative 4, A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster are beautiful albums...i don't think Roadrunner will change Anathema musical direction, maybee they can do it with some bands, but i think Anathema is very personal
Reality is boring...

i was kinda hoping that they'd sign with "Inside Out", i really don't like the musical direction of several bands that they seemed to take after joining "Roadrunner"
