I'd rather be a pirate than a ninja any day of the week. Being a pirate is way more rock and roll than slinking about in black pyjamas, but neither is anywhere near as rock and roll as being a viking. They used to eat enormous quantities of magic mushrooms before setting sail, and they had a wonderful concept of navigation - the instructions for sailing to Britain were as follows: "Sail to Iceland, then turn left."
