nice list Andrea, have 15 of the first 17 and they are all great
albums. Looks like I picked the right albums to start with. Only
two I don't...at the moment... Metamorfosi - Inferno and the New Trolls
Concerto Grosso album. They'll be next up on the 'hit' list.

It would be interesting if we could vote and construct a top 20 list (10 is very restricted, more than 20 is too large and out of focus) of great italian prog groups/albums, without more than a mention per group. I konw this is unfair with a lot of groups (PFM and Le Orme, for example) but this formula can help newbies and people used to the PFM-Banco-Le Orme formula to expand their knowledge. This isn't an original idea; I borrowed it from www.italianprog.com (by the way, an excelent site). Before I start this list (or someone else - this is unimportant), I think you can discuss them. The second phase would be to construct a group list and put them on a poll, but we'd need more than a single poll. I think this can be an exhaustive but very constructive work to the italian prog afficionado and to the people who wish to know this wonderful vein of prog rock. |

Hello Erik, Italian prog-world is full of wonderful surprises Now I'm listening to "Io Sono Murple" (1974)...what a delicate and well structured concept album! Yesterday I've put on my car's cd player Contrappunti: "La Fabbricante d'Angeli" and "Maggio" are beautiful songs, especially for the superb poetic lyrics!! (the first is about illegal abortion...). |

Banco are the greatest Italian group, so they should be on top, IMO. I'm not really a fan of PFM, nor Museo's Zarathustra. Also, Le Orme's best album is Contrappunti, which is missing.

My top 20 is
Floret Silva was released in 1985 (1000 limited LP only). This has not been reissued on CD. Mauro Pelosi is a singer song writer. La Stagione Per Morire may be better known to proggers because Gianni Leone plays on it. Canzonirere Del Lazio is a jazz rock band. Lucio Battisti is probably known to proggers in this site. Anima Latina is close to Il Volo. Only Eris Pluvia's album is recorded after 1990. next 10 is 21.I Pooh/Un Po'Del Nostro Tempo Migliore 22.PFM/Live In Japan 2002 23.Franco Battiato/Pollution 24.Malleus/Paranorm. Op I 25.Quasar Lux Symphoniae/Mit 26.Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso 27.Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso/Seguendo Le Tracce 28.Alan Sorrenti/Aria 29.Quella Vecchia Locanda/Il Tempo Della Gioia 30.Area/1978

I have all of them except "Cherry Five." I love Italian prog, probably my favorite country of origin other than England. There's some great new prog coming from Italy also. Here's a few:

My God, the 20 albums listed form a FANTASTIC collection - I wish I have them all! I'm a PFM fan and the 2 first Premiata's albums are in the top of my list in the same order they were released. Banco's "Darwin" and "Io Sono Nato Libero" comes after, followed by Le Orme's "Felona e Sorona" and again PFM with "L'Isola di Niente". |
