Topic: is Progressive Rock Cool ? Poll Posted: November 27 2005 at 19:11 |
Well.. I feel cool when someone tells me what am I listening and I say
Genesis or Camel and they don't know what am I talking about. And its
true that being uncool makes you cool, I say it on tv

Its ok, its actually "cool" to be "uncool"!
|
Haha I guess it also depends on what the word cool means to people.

It really depends:
If a cool person likes prog, then it's cool. Think of some cool hippie chick that likes prog - thats cool.
If a "not cool" person likes prog, then its not cool. Think of some fat annoying geek that likes prog - thats not cool.
ha!

Cool isn`t what others think of you ... its more about how you see yourself
As Genesis once said ... I Know what I like and I like what I know ... now to me this is cool
the question was asked what do you think ? not what others think ...

Of course it is cool! When I wear my "Fragile" shirt, I can't keep the hot babes away!
Seriously though, I never hear people describe prog as uncool, because most of the people I know don't know enough about prog to decide if it is cool or uncool.

It certainly isn't cool. But I'm more curious as to why it isn't well respected either. Most musical genres that are more complex than many listeners prefer (i.e. classical and jazz) are at least well respected, whereas prog is frequently met with sarcasm and mild scorn.
But hey, it used to be cool! That is back before people called it 'prog.' Jethro Tull and ELP used to be party music. Only back then it was 'rock with some crazy flute guy' not the well-categorized 'prog- folk' we call it. |
You are absolutely correct in your summarisation!

The Thing is I think Dream Theater are cool and the coolest muso I can think of is Geddy Lee from Rush ... as I said at the start of this topic ... isn`t it weird how what isn`t Cool is Cool for not trying to be Cool ? I believe its true ... trying to be cool like most rap and hip hop artists do ruins the validity of just what is cool (cool to me is being natural and being who you are not trying to be somebody else or acting a part). So I think most of you are wrong about this subject ... Sorry ... I can`t think of anything more uncool than to live my life and express my feelings how others want me to be, thats what mainstream people do and its fake. fake = uncool

I'd say it definitely wasn't cool at the minute; cool right now is sickeningly bad rap music, that's so overwrought in its depicition of heterosexuality that it's high camp, stupefyingly dull indie like Coldplay, Snow Patrol and punk rip offs like Franz Ferdinand. With rubbish like that around, I'm proud to be uncool...
Indeed, friends of mine get very agitated when I suggest bands like Radiohead and Muse utilise prog influences, which is an indicator of how much of an Aunt Sally it's become really, as it's been purged from history in a move that would make Stalin proud!
