I love keyboards, but I'm a guitarist at heart.

Both equal. I voted for keyboards because they were behind.
I wonder how a band would sound without either? Oooo, there's a concept!

Keys forever!!! (I'm a Keyboardist)
Both instruments has their pros and cons but I think prog wouldn't be the same without Keyboards Synths pwn your ears!!!

What thread is this?!
Is not the instrument to be important
What is important is the guy who's playing it!

Keys. They have more harmonic possibilities, not too mention the variety of tones and sounds.

As mentioned, you can work with one or the other, both or neither
(though I'd hate to hear that). While I may like the keyboards better
in many cases, the guitar tends to carry more songs in prog (and rock
in general). So I'll take the guitar.

Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards, and Vocals are all equally important to
me. But if I had to choose, I'd say keyboard, being a keyboardist
myself.

It is important to have the rock in progressive rock. But guitars aren't needed to rock out, just look at ELP and VDGG. But I'll go with guitar anyway.

I think that the drummer is is the rock in progressive rock as I have no doubt Van Der Graaf Generator are progressive rock and they do not have a guitarist (6 and 12 string) I also think a decent vocalist can cover the keys and guitar to a point. But if I had my choice I would have every instrument found in bands like Yes and Genesis.

Prog is partly distinguised by it's use of keyboards, personally i wouldn't find Lake and Palmer to be even remotely cool as Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Keyboards are not required for prog, but they are a cornerstone of this genre. Guitar is an essential part of almost any band, but guitar has little to do with the identity of a band/genre. I voted keyboards.
Another note: A guitar will never have the tonal diversity of a Moog, Virus, or digital synth.

I think keybaords are more important in prog, cause sure you can have a great prog band with no keybaords, but just the massive array of sounds you can do with keyboards brings your music to phenomenal levels.

I like both, but generally I like to hear a guitar in a band. However, some bands like VDGG dont really suffer for the lack of guitar. It's part of their sound and their quirkiness and they manage it and compensate for it excellently IMO.
Rush on the other hand will always be better with some keyboards IMO. I like their last few albums, but it's not really the Rush I like. I felt they struck a good balance on "moving Pictures' and 'Permenant Waves'

Both are equally important because without guitarists like Howe, Hackett, Fripp, Lifeson, Stolt, etc. Prog as we know it won't exist. Same with keyboards like Minnear, Emerson, Wakeman, Banks, etc.
