Well, this had already moved off the first page and a third down the second page. I want to thank those who already have voted and commented on selections, and no pressure on those who have not, and I'm hoping someone will come up with a new Interactive Poll soon. I wish there was a good way to entice many who don't normally participate in such thing into participating or making one themselves. By the way, here's a track I liked off Uboa's latest, which I will mention here. |

Group 2, gave it to Adult Jazz with Eunuch being my second choice.
Group 3, the only group where I voted for myself. Liked the other songs but not enough to vote for them. Group 4/5 will give it to Tapir.

For group 1, my favourites (excluding my suggestion, Still House Plants) were Beth Gibbons and Barbara Morgenstern. I give slight precedence to Barbara; Beth's track is beautiful, but it feels like it's near the end of a road of discovery; my interest in her is due to her history, and while I like the album, it doesn't inspire me to branch out. Whereas Barbara is part of a scene I have no history with and can see myself exploring further / branching out into.
But of course the vote should be on the musical quality, and I also tend to like Barbara's a bit more. Honourable mention to Decemberists, Burial Ground may be the track from this list that gets stuck in my head easiest.

Final votes go to Mdou Moctar (very tough decision against the Blackbriar track that I also like very much), and Leprous together with the Ghost Funk Orchestra (and then I knew The Smile and Tapir already).
Still nothing has three votes... taste is very subjective... Edited by Lewian - June 23 2024 at 18:17 |

In Bonus Group 2 I vote for William Shatner, very charming. The Julia Holter albums is great but I have that already. They're all good.

The Bonus Group 1 overall is quite a bit more to my liking than the Nonbonus Officials. I love that Aquaserge song (very reliable band!) but won't vote for it as I didn't discover it through this poll. Votes go to Eunuchs and the wonderful Bat for Lashes. I have an earlier album of hers that I like a lot, but lost track of her in the meantime.

I start with the official nominees. I have a hard time voting as pretty much all of them are good but none is outstanding. To be honest I'm not yet fully convinced of 2024 as a music year. Anyway, I think my no. 1 is the Still House Plants track. I'll also vote for Beth Gibbons and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
More later.

Third listen, I think one or two more and I'll make my vote. Not a whole lot of change. The Decemberists song (Burial Ground) is getting more and more wedged in as an ear worm. I don't think the William Shatner song is meant to be listened to this much / this close together, I wouldn't mind not hearing it again for a few months, although it's entertaining enough.
Only reason to listen to it again is there are a few tracks that haven't quite 'registered'. I'd like to be able to recall a melody or at least an emotional reaction to each track before I vote. I may remove all the songs that I feel I've got a hold on already before the next listen, which should lessen the load. I wish I liked the SGM song more. I was so excited for this album, after years and years of waiting and loving their first 3. But I don't think any of their new songs have connected with me like their old stuff did. I tried going back to their old stuff and I loved it as much as ever. The new stuff has all the right ingredients. But I can't remember what any of the songs sound like when I'm not listening to it, other than the This Heat cover. I was hoping having a 'highlight' in isolation might stand out more but it hasn't happened yet.

Thanks Stephen, George and Kees for your votes. I found much very enjoyable music here and in my own time this year looking for music that might appeal), and to think that this year is very far from over. And I'm happy that no one complained about the way I set things up as I know I can over-complicate things; I tend not to go the simplest route. I wanted to cover it all in a way that I thought might work fairly since different people suggested different numbers and would be practical and flexible since we don't have all the time in the world, but I also like to present something of a challenge often for those who wish to embrace it. Wonderful recommendations from all of you who participated; thanks for sharing. And thanks in advance to any other respondents.

From section 1, I voted for Orange Blossom and Barbara Morgenstern. I like Sleepytime Gorilla Musrum but I already own this. One of two that I was familiar with (other than my suggestions) prior to the poll. The other is The Smile. There would have been a tie for my third vote.
From Section 2, I voted for Solar and Aquaserge. Eunuchs would have been third. |

OK, starting to decide on some votes: From the Main nominations I go for Beth Gibbons and Barbara Morgenstern; these are the two tracks that really stand out for me. Regarding the first bonus section it becomes much more difficult, because of the diversity of the tracks that I like very much, especially Gnome and Fortune, Blues, Nova, Marquee and The Dream of Delphi. I think I'll go with the first two - a third vote could go to Bat For Lashes... Then, Bonus #2 is easy: I didn't propose Julia Holter, but I could have. Now it allows me to vote for her. For Bonus #3 I'll go with St. Vincent, though I also very much appreciated Blackbriar's Moonflower. That's it for now...

Finished my second listen through and realized that I missed the Eunuch and The Smile tracks, so added those. I like the Eunuch one quite a bit. Somehow I didn't realize The Smile was a Radiohead offshoot until hearing this song.
This time through, the heavier tracks started to gain some ground, especially Sgaile and Caligula's Horse.

^ Thanks, Kees. I never really warmed up to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum either (can be too brutal for me and I am not the biggest metal guy despite, say, liking Isahn. I'm hardly the least metal guy either so maybe I should stop thinking about that altogether lol). Most I really liked from this list.
------------------------------------------- By the way, I used asterisks hopefully to help define the sections from poll options 1 to 23. - SECTION ONE for the expected listening where you can vote for two or three options is * Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" to Ihsahn "The Distance Between Us" * - SECTION TWO of bonus options where you can vote for up to two options is * Eunuchs "Gnome and Fortune" to Caligula's Horse "Stormchaser" * - SECTION THREE of bonus options where you can vote for one track is * Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves" to DarWin "Be That Man" * - SECTION FOUR of bonus options where you can vote for one is * St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" to Mdou Moctar "Imouhar" * - For the last two poll options with multiple entries, those or OR options. You can vote for one track from option 24 and one from option 25. I was able to add the hidden from me due to location Orange Blossom "Mawj" video you listed to the playlist (so two there now in the playlist even if only one is available). Haven't finished listening yet, but I thought I'd share some of my very subjective impressions, at least for the main nominations...: I discoverd this Beth Gibbons' track thanks to the radio and I think it's beautiful. I listened to her album twice now and although all of the tracks keep that beauty I'm afraid that it doesn't have enough diversity to keep my attention throughout. After the first minute of Still House Plants i thought "this is not for me", but it has something quirky, punky and intriguing over it. Interesting. Will listen to it again, although I don't think it will end up high on my lists. Idles deliver a rich kind of indie rock; a short full sounding hypnotic epic. Very nice. Yes, this Barbara Morgenstern track is beautiful. An interesting rich minimalist piece (if such a paradox makes sense) with clear chamber pop qualities. Will explore her album. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is a band I should like, but I don't. Somehow their chamber rock + metal formula doesn't work for me. I recognize the quality, but especially the metal side rather puts me off. Talking about metal (is it?), I prefer Sgàile then. I probably wouldn't become a fan, but it is nice to hear this kind of polished hard rock sometimes. A bit conventional maybe, but quite enjoyable. Melvins deliver a kind of 80s flavoured RIO punk () on this track - quite nice, actually. Not sure if I would like a whole album of it, but a track like this every once in a while is great. I do like the The Decemberists track. Very "radio friendly" in a way: accessible, melodic, captivating... Nice, but not "outstanding". Oh, how I hate growling... But there are other elements in this Ihsahn track that I appreciate much more: the (normal) singing, the orchestral/symphonic aspects, a.o. Maybe a bit conventional on the composition side but by moments quite enjoyable, despite the growling bits. The first bonus section is of more consistent high quality music, to my ears. I like all of them: the Bryan Ferry goes chamber rock track by Eunuchs. I love that Blues track by Solar! The Ghost Funk Orchestra very enjoyable, just like the chamber-rock jazzy (duh) Adult Jazz track, the beautiful dreamy electronic folk-pop of Bat For Lashes... Even Caligula's Horse is not unpleasant (but maybe a bit too conventional to my ears). I'll have to read the manual again to understand how we may vote, but I haven't decided yet, anyway... Oh, and the Orange Blossom track doesn't play for me in the playlist; if other people encounter this problem they can find it on page 1 of this thread.

My votes:
From the Official Nominees section (options 1 to 10): Orange Bloosom "Mawj" IDLES "Jungle" and Still House Plants "M M M" Wanted to give votes for Melvins) Barbara D. and The Decemberists too. Bonus Selections 1 (options 11-17): Aquaserge "Sommets" Adult Jazz "Marquee" Honorable mention to Bat For Lashes' "The Dream of Delphi" Bonus Selections 2 (poll options 18 to 20): "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!" And Shatner [might have] thought he couldn't get any higher than with the Blue Origin Space Shuttle, but he just did with my stellar vote. {Note: The elephant in the room... I'm sorry, I made a mistake by not putting Shatner in the poll just because it was not in the playlist -- sorry will add to another option in that section as an OR option. } Bonus Selections 3 (option 24): Ghost Funk Orchestra "Totality (Crown Lites Dub). Love this. Bonus Selections 4 (option 25): The Decemberists "Joan in the Garden". Sorry about not giving Shatner his own space especially since that fictional starship Captain has actually been to space. Edited by Logan - June 18 2024 at 22:58 |

^ Awesome. I have yet to do a proper listening off all of the choices, but, not surprisingly as I made the topic this way, I will want to people listen to all and consider all. Glad you like the Tapir! While I posted it low in the list for some reason, not that it matters, I really like it and the album it's off.
By the way, I know the way I set up voting could be bit confusing for some -- I love playing around with such things and I wanted to be inclusive -- but I wanted to be inclusive and offer some flexibility in voting and that which one is expected to listen. As long as people share their votes I don't much mind how people vote. As I often say, I pay more attention to the posts more than the polls and I don't treat polls as contests (not that others here would either as I don't think that's the Interactive Poll mindset from my experience). The voting is part of the fun as well as sharing our appreciations. :) I'm going to be getting really busy again (it comes in spurts, I mean work specifically) and so probably will want to listen again tonight and maybe vote by tomorrow. No hurry for anyone else, but I tend to avoid this site when busy with other things. PA is a great way to pass the time, but it can take up a lot of time the way I use it quite often. Once in, thanks to all who participated. And I hope, Pedro, that you do find some enjoyable music. No doubt the comparison is not very apt, and it may even be offensive as we may not be worthy of such comparison, but we (the PA Spaced Buccaneers) are something like a collective Space Pirate Radio Guy Guden. |

I made the playlist and have listened to it 1.5 times. Actually it's got a bunch of pretty sweet tunes in it and I don't mind listening to it at all.
Adult Jazz and Tapir! probably stood out to me most the first time through (from the stuff I hadn't heard) and both the Bat for Lashes and Beth Gibbons tracks started to show their beauty a bit more. A few of the others are starting to stand out as well.

I'll have to spend a bit of time catching up. I've heard 60% of the 'top' selection. Will have to make a playlist in Apple Music so I can listen to this while I work.
