He has a very orchestral sound, and he drums as he were the percussionist in an orchestra.

Dear Rover,

i recently read your post on nick mason, and could not contain my utter disgust and rage concerning your thoughts on nick mason. to put it bluntly mr rover, you are an incompetent fool and should be thrown out of this forum simply because of your idiocy. . Mr Rover, good day to you and hope u perish in a barn fire.

your sincerely, Ben Retter

You need to work further on your use of capitals (I not i, names must start with a capital and so must sentences). You is not spelt u. Yours has an "s" on the end.

However, for a 7 year old, this is a very good attempt. Well done, Ben. Keep trying!

His bread and butter is that big drum intro lick he plays (perhaps overplays) on many many Floyd songs, with some slight variations, and usually comes right before the vocals kick in after an extended instrumental part: Bump...bump...badudduhbumpaduh. Think Echoes, Time, Sheep, and many other Floyd classics.

I know the one!  I love those bits!

Hey, you know what my theory is about why Floyd sounded better at Live 8 than on P.U.L.S.E?  'Cause Nick was in charge of the drumming.

And sorry Ivan, I just can't agree that Graham Broad sounds better.  He doesn't sound anything like Nick, and PF doesn't work the same way without him.  (Likewise any other member)

Nick Mason was a good drummer. To feel a song is IMO more important than technical skills. The less-is-more principle of Mason is not so easy as most people think it is.

Bravo Nick

Bill Bruford is maybe the best example of a drummer with great technical skills combined with a perfect sense for feel.

Nick Mason for me ,he was one of greta drummers in 70's with the double pedal Ludwig drums,in Live in Pompeii and Boston Gardens 75,he is one of gods with a stronger kick drum.

Years of Mason with his moustache,LoL!

the members of that band complement each other perfectly. None of the guys were the most talented at their instruments (or at least they never showed it) but they never held each other back. Even though the drums aren't doing much, the bass is simple, the keyboards aren't spewing a million notes a measure, it still works so well.
If you tried to stick Nick Mason in King Crimson, or Rick Wright in Genesis, the two guys would look awful, and hold back the rest of the people in the band.
For some reason, the lack of insane instrumentation in Floyd, isn't a turnoff at all. Great band.

That proves once again that making good music is not a mere excercise in technicality.
I personally prefer Rick Wright to Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson: he's not a virtuoso, but he is able to set the mood and the ambience, which the other two often fail to do.
A flower?

Nick does a great job live, but for some reason falls short on albums. He does fit the band very well and knows his limits technically. His forte was in the bass drum and tom toms.

About Rick, I believe he was the best player in the band and his song writing was at times better than Roger's. He had the best melodies, and is responsible for writing all the brilliant "scary" sections in thier songs like, Echoes, Atom Heart Mother, and Saucerful of secrets. He alone wrote the crescendo peices in Echoes and Celestial Voices ( the end of Saucerful). He is also responsible for the beautiful balads like Us and Them, the heart filled ending of SOYCD, parts 8 and 9 I believe, and The Great Gig.
