Normally I like to come up with a newly thought out list every time a similar topic comes up. But I'll post the exact same list[s} I did in an older topic that I responded to very recently. See Drew'sList one great album per year for the 2000s One could say that these kinds of topics involving release times are timeless at PA. I have read at another forum how much PAers are obsessed with lists, and I am no exception.

My top Prog, by PA standards albums are:

2009: Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré
2008: Elephant9 - Dodovoodoo
2007: William D. Drake - Briny Hooves
2006: OOIOO - Taiga
2005: Guapo - Black Oni
2004: Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons
2003: Robert Wyatt - Cuckooland
2002: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.
2001: Secret Chiefs 3 - Book M
2000: Radiohead - Kid A

And while not asked for, to me this not in PA list is relevant, and a line between Prog and non-Prog (the Prog and non-Prog dichotomy) actually becomes harder for me to make as I get older. Most of this falls under my Prog umbrella.

2009: Natural Snow Buildings - Daughter of Darkness
2008: Portishead - Third
2007: PJ Harvey - White Chalk
2006: Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun
2005: Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
2004: Electrelane - The Power Out
2003: Melt-Banana - Cell-Scape (it's noisy and I find it fun)
2002: Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
2001: Air - 10 000 Hz Legend
2000: Broadcast - The Noise Made by People

Once again, I will be picking runners up, but there's also a few years (2003, 2007, 2009) where I ABSOLUTELY cannot pick just one album:

2000: The Shaming of the True by Kevin Gilbert (The Perfect Element - Part 1 by Pain of Salvation, V by Spock's Beard)
2001: Lateralus by Tool
2002: In Absentia by Porcupine Tree (Remedy Lane by Pain of Salvation)
2003: Choirs of the Eye by Kayo Dot & De-Loused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta
2004: K.A. by Magma (The Human Equation by Ayreon)
2005: Everyone Into Position by Oceansize (Ghost Reveries by Opeth, Second Life Syndrome by Riverside, The Art of Navigating By the Stars by Sieges Even)
2006: Act I: The Lake South, The River North by The Dear Hunter
2007: Doomsday Afternoon by Phideaux & Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree
2008: Blomljud by Moon Safari (Sleeping in Traffic: Part Two by Beardfish, Bantam to Behemoth by Birds and Buildings, Who's the Boss in the Factory? by Karmakanic)
2009: The Underfall Yard by Big Big Train & Part the Second by Maudlin of the Well
I use they/them pronouns (feel free to ask me about this!)

Check out my music on my bandcamp!

1I am not very familiar with early 2000's prog. From 2000 I could name a non-prog album (Dorothea by the Belgian folk-rock trio Laïs) as a favourite.

I have one year in each of the 80's, 90's and 00's that I would rather not have made a choice because I don't have a favourite. 1984, 1990 and 2001.

I love The Tangent and A Place In The Queue is the place to start!!! It's as if Yes and ELP were Canterbury Scene bands. And Andy Tillison is angry and opinionated and it's just a whole lot of fun!!!
Okay, here's my revamped list, featuring only post-1970's modern bands - my only regret being that I couldn't include Ayreon's Human Equation in the line-up as it clashes with my all-time favourite Symphonic Metal album by Within Temptation:-

2000: IQ - The Seventh House
2001: Mostly Autumn - The Story So Far
2002: Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
2003: Karnataka - Delicate Flame of Desire
2004: Within Temptation - The Silent Force
2005: Mostly Autumn - Storms Over Still Water
2006: The Tangent - A Place in the Queue
2007: Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
2008: Mostly Autumn - Glass Shadows
2009: The Tangent - Down and Out in Paris and London

^Interesting pick! Mine would be one of the King Crimson records from the 70s, maybe 'Larks'.

Lol... a little like you with your older artists, looking at it this way by year it's clear in my collection that around 2007-2008 it seems I stopped moving forward and started going backwards in time again.  I have little new from 2008 onwards other than collecting from older artists and completing older artists.
On that note, I'm currently putting together a list of my favourite albums from the years 2010 through to 2020, although I'll wait until I've listened to all of The Tangent's albums before I post it. Smile

Going off on a slight tangent here, but I don't understand how listening to any album once could possibly result in it becoming your favourite album of that year!  Unless it's the only one you've heard from that year....

Ermm
Well, if it is an unprecedented masterpiece and you get otherworldly visions and sensations while listening to it, while being transported through the sounds you hear to another universe that has been unknown to you before, then we can talk about albums becoming your favorites for a particular year after just one listen. LOL

The only album that's ever come close to doing that for me was The Human Equation.  But I could not possibly have made it the year's best immediately!

Here are mine:
2000: Fates Warning - 'Disconnected'
2001: The Flower Kings - 'The Rainmaker'
2002: Porcupine Tree - 'In Absentia'
2003: Arena - 'Contagion'/ Dream Theater - 'Train of Thought' (I really cannot choose one over the other)
2004: The Flower Kings - 'Adam & Eve'/ The Dillinger Escape Plan - 'Miss Machine' (same here)
2005: The Mars Volta - 'Frances the Mute'
2006: Frost* - 'Milliontown'
2007: Porcupine Tree - 'Fear of a Blank Planet'
2008: Beardfish - 'Sleeping in Traffic Part Two'
2009: Mastodon - 'Crack the Skye'/ Transatlantic - 'The Whirlwind'/ Porcupine Tree - 'The Incident'

I just cannot pick one favorite for most of these years, this is close to impossible for me!
Goddamn, I have said it many times before, the 2000s are the decade that comes closest to challenging the 70s in terms of originality, variety and quality of progressive music!
