Nova
Fables
Martin

but several that didn't make the cut were actually my favorites...really liked London Song by Nova...and the Peacock track and Dar Williams.

A strong edition, but perhaps I missed a few more songs in a major key. My votes go to:

Nico - "Mütterleiin"
Lianne La Havas - “Courage”
Fiona Apple - "Sullen Girl"

@Nickie, glad you got a laugh from Lily Allen. Catchy tune and chorus does get stuck in my head. Caught myself almost singing it out loud at the store the other day, although it would have been muffled by the face mask I was wearing.

This poll is one of my favourite.

The music is excellent.

My podium:

1) Gold medal: NICO: Mutterlein.

This song is an absolute masterpiece. It's spectral free-folk-jazz music with a dissonant relationship between vocals and music. Thanks to John Cale for the arrangement and the production.

Desertshore is on of my fave album ever.

Many other songs are excellent but this song, for my taste, sets them all by a great distance.

2) Silver Medal: Barbara Morgenstein: Silver medal: remarkable orchestral song, excellent vocal performance by the singer and the choir

3) Bronze Medal: Faun Fables: Goodbye. For the third position, in my mind there was a duel between this song and Heather Nova's song. Both are excellent, wonderful vocal performance, and in the end Goodbye won for the
excentric arrangement.

----------------------------

Honorable mentions:

4) Heather Nova

5) Annika Aakjær “Kjøvenhavner-sangen (The Copenhagen song)”

6) Anjelica Garcia

7) An Pierlè

8) Mary Black

A good night of sleep, the rain pouring outside, a nice cup of coffee. Perfect day for listening to this Approve
I think Heather Nova and Barbara Morgenstern stand out more in this poll. I could have chosen any other for my third vote but gave the first vote for Anneka Aakjaer, lovely tune.

Ultimately it comes down to Heather Nova vs. Nico vs. Melanie vs. Francesca Lago vs. An Pierle. I can't really exclude hardly anything, let me also mention Annika Akjaer and Lianne Le Havas (the only one of these apart from Barbara Morgenstern I have seen live), but ultimately of course I have to...

So out of the top five... I'll look a bit at who has votes already, and surely Nico and Melanie deserve them, so that'll be my top two... and of the others I'm today most drawn to Francesca Lago. But really, I can understand why moshkito tends to write he doesn't like "Top X" as ranking hardly can do classy works justice.

Good songs overall. Two stand out here, these seem to have an added dimension: Faun Fables and Frau Morgenstern. My third vote I'd grant to Heather Nova.

Honourable mentions: An Pierlé, Angelica Garcia and Fiona Apple.

I absolutely agree with you, there!  Even if I didn't mention someone specifically, all of the selections were choice material.

Literally every single song, when listened to consciously and/or for the second time, has something special. How annoying for making my mind up... and well done folks!

Glad to hear someone likes her music as much as I do.  I don't think she gets enough recognition.

Here we go, for my votes:

As always, huge thanks to everyone participating!  All were excellent contributions.  And always also to Lorenzo for the creation of the polls and George for the playlists!

1.  Angelica Garcia “Valentina in the Moonlight”  You may say you don’t have a lot to draw from, but you got some cream of the crop here, with her.  I just love this.  Dark, haunting, spare, a sad story and a lovely voice.  That just soars in the chorus.  Wow.  This one knocks me out. And still did, every listen.

2.  Francesca Lago “Bring the Noise”  Dark electric guitar opens, joined by Francesca’s dark, confessional voice, then cello (?). I wouldn’t mess with her.  I like this one a lot, she creates a perfect atmosphere.  Interesting end choice, with the children singing the chorus.  I like songs that give me chills, this one did also, esp with the ending.  Teach your children well.

3.  Barbara Morgenstern “Angel’s Whisper” Definitely striking atmospheric performance video all in “concert black,” with the choir clapping and singing in a ghostly/angelic way.  Her accompaniment on the piano is minimal, yet perfect for the piece, the sax (and a little bit of electronic keyboard) perfectly underscores the music in just the right places to the crescendo ending.  This was such a striking performance piece.

Honorable Mentions:

An Pierlé “Helium Sunset”  Love the title.  This has a feeling of the stage to me. Very expressive voice.  Another ominous piece with her voice punctuating and stressing, stretching and relaxing, very dynamic.  I like the way she uses her voice as an instrument here.  On perusing the lyrics, maybe a suicidal trip for two?  Another haunting one.

Mary Black “Trying to Get the Balance”  I do know this one and this treasure of Ireland.  This song is about relationships, figuratively getting balance right as tight-rope walkers, getting balance right also makes me think of balancing sound, and she does mention trying to be in harmony, in the lyrics.  Piano and guitar back her clear vocals.  If I hadn't known of it, would have been in my top 3, still feel it is so strong, I must make mention of it.

Special Mention:  If Drew had been able to come back in time, this would also have fought for a top 3 spot.  He did contact me and is sorry he didn't have the time to participate fully.  Julia Holter “Words I Heard” Live in studio setting here, piano and strings.  I love this kind of a piece, melancholy, soft horns play along from time to time, this has a very “city” feeling to me, thoughtful and sophisticated.  Climax of the piece, with shimmery harmonies, making me think of church bells, somehow, then back down to the general feel to conclude.

And, trumpets announce for an extra-special award, goes to Lily Allen's "f**k You," doubtless inspired by the phantom early voter and made me laugh.  *curtseys* to George!

There has been a terrible fight at the foot of the podium, but the three that managed to climb on the three steps are:
- Faun Fables - Goodbye (listened to and ordered their album)
- Barbara Morgenstern - Angel's Whisper
- Angelica Garcia - Valentina in the Moonlight

If Julia Holter would have been in the fight, she would have kicked one off (don't know who though); I ordered her album too.

I could be missing something, but I searched through 3 times to make sure that he didn't indicate it as a final (or any), same for Icarium.
