A-Z of German Krautrock Artists

DULL KNIFE       The cover artwork for Dull Knife's one and only album of bluesy, hard-rockin' tunes bears a passing resemblance to a certain album by Genesis (you already guessed which one), but Dull Knife are no match for Genesis, to put it bluntly. Tongue

4 stars 1971: Dull Knife - Electric Indian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjNjf8Y4J_0&t=192s

DSCHINN     Gesundheit! The strangely-named Dschinn were a short-lived, psychedelic hard rock band who had the unique distinction of including two drummers in their line-up. Kind of like a German King Crimson then, only much better! Uh-oh, now I'm in trouble. If anyone (or more likely everyone) disagrees with me, I'll just have to take it on Dschinn. Embarrassed

A-Z of German Krautrock Artists

DROSSELBART       The enigmatic name of this mysterious Krautrock band refers to King Thrushbeard (Konig Drosselbart), a German fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. There's nothing grim about this fine album though, combining weird psychedelic textures with thrumming power chords and featuring the over-earnest vocals of Peter Randt, contrasting brilliantly with the beautiful siren-song call of Jemima, who could surely lure many an unwary sailor to his doom. A Krautrock classic! Clap

4 stars 1970: Drosselbart - Drosselbart - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcqyTKhKyZ0&t=5s

DREAMWORLD      When fantasy meets reality..... Or when an album exceeds your wildest expectations and throws new light on old windows. Wow!! Dreamworld's "On Flight to the Light" album really blew me away today. Dreamworld duo Klaus & Rolf Fichter describe their music as "expressing a deep sensibility for fundamental human desires, such as warmth, tenderness, happiness and Love, with a desire to uncover beautiful things in ever-changing musical variations." Right on to that! Thumbs Up

 5 stars 1980: Dreamworld - On Flight to the Light - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZvdcUCadaA&t=1s

DORIAN GRAY     Picture this.... A mysterious band of uncertain provenance with an enigmatically-named album containing music that sounds ever-so-slightly punkish in places but including enough psychedelic trippiness to please the most stoned-out acid-headed hippies. In other words, it's everything we've come to love about Krautrock. It's almost as weird as that dark novel of the same name by the unstable, self-declared "genius", Oscar Wilde. Smile

DOM     Weird and wonderful stuff..... A mysterious otherworldly album that takes the listener on a spacey, psychedelic acid trip that transcends the Edge of Time itself, sounding as good today as it did over fifty years ago, so why not travel back in time and relative dimension in space with the transcendental music of Dom - and without the aid of the TARDIS too. Geek

DIES IRAE     Not such an eternal flame.....  Too whacked out, stoned and sacrilegious even for German radio back in 1971, Dies Irae were Germany's answer to Black Sabbath - at least for a brief while - before flaming out in an unholy blaze of glory. They say the Devil has all the best tunes, and you'll find some of them here on this fine album. You heard it here First, and remember, just because you're Paranoid, it doesn't mean someone's not out to get you.  Tongue

DEUTER      A well-known manufacturer of backpacks and sleeping bags and a lesser-known German manufacturer of soporific New Age music, for which a sleeping bag may well come in handy, and where some of Deuter's seemingly interminable albums make an 8-hour somnambulistic jam-fest by the Grateful Dead seem relatively brief by comparison.  Sleepy

I believe @PsychelicPaul would give at least the first two a big 👍. I welcome his thoughts and other Prog

So true, and staying with the Teutonic theme, it's German week at Grace Brothers with Miss Brahms (Wendy Richard) looking especially attractive in her busenhosen and Mrs. Slocombe (Mollie Sugden) looking ever so slightly sozzled. Smile

Meanwhile, Young Mr. Grace's attractive nurse has a novel way of testing his blood pressure to see if his equipment is working properly. Tongue

DER NEUE PLANET      Zweifarbig Bomber! The psychedelic krauts strike again... Cologne-based Space Rock band Der Neue Planet (rough translation: The New Planet) launch a pulverising blitzkrieg attack on the eardrums in the most window-rattling display of awesome power since Lancaster bombers last flew over Cologne. Don't mention the war! Shocked

DELVING      Scenes from a memory.... We're Delving deep into the deer fountain now with Nick DiSalvo, an American based in Germany and the composer of Hirschbrunnen, proving that the spirit of Krautrock still carries on in 2021. Dream Theater anyone? Wink

DATASHOCK      A German spook folk commune (meaning they've brought their families along too) who play meandering and shamanic (or shambolic!?) tripped-out freak folk. Yes, this band of neo-hippies are definitely one toke over the line, just like Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson in the video below, who's wondering how he's going to smuggle his drugs haul (worth all of £5 on the streets of London) through British customs without anyone noticing. Tongue
