Topic: Are captchas killing PA? Posted: August 06 2017 at 11:09 |
I have tried to read through everything posted here in this thread, and will read on a little more. The Captcha are simply making it difficult to post. It's not killing it yet but it will certainly change the face of the forum as we know it. Over last few days lost several reply's to threads. Some I have saved before trying to submit, others I have re-written and others due to lack of time or having given up have left alone. I don't think they are totally killing P.A. The Captcha are likely to turn people away especially new blood which we need to keep the forum alive and fresh. There seems to be a trend at the moment where long established forums which once had very healthy populations of very lively people have virtually gone quiet. In some cases it may be that virtually everything that can be said has been said and new people are finding it difficult to join in with ongoing conversations or add new threads. Then again it may just be the natural norm for this age we live in. At least two forums I have been members of for many years are now the home of no more then half a dozen people who constantly answer each others posts. When a new person posts they are ignored. I have not seen that here,so it is a very friendly forum. It is still very daunting to post here even as an established member as it's only the music that interests me as a whole. I am not a musician ,or a philosopher, or a music historian so I can only join in on a very basic level. I do have problems often writing replies, It's difficult to try to think of something to add to a conversation and even tying my reply may take several attempts and edits. So yeah!, the Captcha is making things difficult so unless you really want to get through and post a reply desperately people are just as likely to give up and do something else instead. P.S It's taken me a whole Renaissance album to write this, and possibly several more to get it through the Captcha, . Don't preview your posts either as that also tends to prompt the Captcha to kick in.

As I understand it, there was a surge of scripted spamming originating from India and the Captcha tests were introduced to remedy that. For some unknown reason, the validation more often than not fails and the user loses all their post content. I think posts containing images have a higher chance of triggering a Captcha check, but I've definitely had it happen to me when posting only text.

Not spam. All evidence points to this being more about DNS attacks.
There are things that I have noticed decrease the likelihood of recaptcha quizzes:
Accurate system clock Latest OS security patches Updated AV/MW definition Posting from a non-MS OS Limiting links and embedded content (edit...almost forgot this one) Simultaneous streaming while posting
Nothing seems to prevent it 100%, but I have noticed a difference when I make sure the above issues are addressed. I still copy my text before posting.

Should've said "threads": http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=111123
But yeah, one more time: The admins and mods have no say in the big decisions and much of the time they're just as much in the dark as you are. No big secrets or hush hush keep it on the down low...just a lack of communication though not on our part.

I have cut my comments back a lot because I get annoyed that I have to save every damn post before Captcha kills it.

I have tonight, though, started to get a message telling me the intertit is redirecting me to PA, checking that the site is safe?
I have never seen this before, but I was kicked out a couple of times with the forum permission error message. | yup, I've experienced this this morning at work... but not at home during the w-e (though I'm not sure I actually logged in) And last Friday, I couldn't access some album pages , because of potential sexual contents.

A cynic might posit the following thesis: 1. PA is commercially worthless and unsaleable. The advertising revenue to be derived from its ever-shrinking userbase of ageing and penniless music obsessives, oddballs and sexual perverts does not defray the server costs. 2. However, just shutting the site down would carry certain risks given that some of said obsessives have pyschological characteristics that uncannily fit the Unabomber template in the FBI / Ladybird book of criminal profiling. 3. Therefore it's preferable to systematically drive away the userbase by making the site more and more unusable until there are only three or four prog nerds left. Because if there are less than five potential suspects, and policemen can count up to five (they have fingers) it would be too risky for someone to eighty-six the site owner.
