Ian Gillan is fine, but not a match for Roger Daltrey.

A buddy of mine saw the Faces at the Hollywood Bowl in or around 1971. He said that Rod invited the punters in the half-empty Bowl to move down to the front and have a drink (the Faces had a full bar on stage as a part of their show)......bad move - the LA crowd took Rod seriously and the front rows jumped up on stage and attacked the bar. The folks in back moved in waves to the front. The venue had to be cleared and the concert cancelled. Just another Saturday night in 1971.

It was a good show in the old days.....but I have to say that The Faces were a little rough around the edges...both them and the Stones could be a little sloppy at times.

I prefer the Who and Daltrey,,,,,but I recall a good show in Chicago in 71 or 72 where DP opened up for The Faces with Rod Stewart. About the only thing I recall about DP was that Lord at one point had his organ up against his leg with him lifting it slightly up and forward while he played.

Gillan by a landslide. There's a musical generation gap I find The Who on the wrong side of and Deep Purple on the right side.

I saw Deep Purple in 1973 (I was 13!). My ears are still ringing. |
Wow...that would have been amazing! I had tix for Perfect Strangers but I got sick and had to give it away. After spending an entire night camping out in frigid subzero weather for the tix. God that sucked.

For the entirety of his work, I'd say Daltrey. For a single release, Gillan on Made in Japan.

Daltrey.....but I much prefer the Who over Purple, so that plays a big part I'm sure. In fact my favorite album featuring Ian would be Born Again, not the purps.
