This may be the shortest thread ever, but does anyone know of any Prog that features the Bagpipe? Or any that uses it in some songs? It seems like something Mike Oldfield and Iona have done on occassion, but I can't recall.
It seems like it would be a cool sound if done properly in a prog format. I am not sure where or why this popped in my brain... ![]() Edited by AEProgman - December 28 2012 at 08:28 |

Alan Stivell.
He is known for his harp playing more than anything else, but you will hear a wide variety of exotic instruments being played on his albums. Including bag pipes. I reviewed one of his early efforts that has a track which incorporates bag pipes in the most ingenious way. |

Seven Reizh.
And not prog but rather celtic folk black metal, Aes Dana and Heol Telwenn use bombard, another instrument typical of Brittany.

The pipes can be heard roughly half-way through the song. I've always loved this song. Edited by The Dark Elf - December 28 2012 at 12:42 |

Oh yes I forgot about them, although their bagpipes do sound a little sampled at times but what the hell. Check out the gorgeous sound 1 minute in. |

A pre-progressive tune, circa 1968, uses bagpipes to great effect. Many of the elements in this Animals' tune can be considered at least prog-related:

The Prog Folk bands Faun and Adaro (both German) use bagpipes. Adaro also prominently features a lead singer who plays hurdy gurdy.

So much new music to try from the responses here, thanks! The ones I have managed to listen to so far:
Dark Elf - I have that JT album and totally forgot that one, plus I would have never thought of that Animals song either.
lucas/Sagi - That Seven Reizh song did have a beutiful mix of the pipes, however the rest of song intrigued me as I had not heard of them before, looks like I will have to investigate them further.
Dwill - Rufus Harley with Coltrane on bagpipes was insane!

Marillion - Brave
Steve Hackett - Set Your compass (ends with bagpipe) (but I thought it is the only weak thing in the song...

Iona uses bagpipes frequently, but they're not the well known Scottish variety; they're the lesser known Irish pipes that maintain airflow with bellows that the player pumps, rather than being blown into by the musician.
