The band Muse has been sued $3.5 million dollars for allegedly stealing their idea for their 3-part song Exogenesis from their The Resistance album. http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/muse-face-3-5m-lawsuit-over-rock-opera/?ns_service=mail&ns_robot=partner-Adestra&ns_campaign=2978&ns_source=Adestra&ns_mchannel=email-n&ns_linkname=Muse%20face%20%243.5%20million%20%28%C2%A32.2m%29%20lawsuit%20over%20rock%20opera&ns_fee=0&ns_recipient=scottviall%40yahoo.com&ns_mail_uid=60&ns_mail_job=4054

They haven't been sued according to that. There is a lawsuit.

Is a lawsuit not being sued?

I'm not a specialist of the American judiciary system, but I think that the band would be officialy sued only if the Manhattan Federal Court accepts to take the said lawsuit in charge. |

I don't know. I thought if you had to pay out and it has been proved, you have been sued. besides you said they had been sued not they are being sued. I have no quibble with that statement.

Very interesting to see how this pans out.If its true then it seems odd that Bellamy didn't even bother to change the title.
As sidenote I'm looking forward to the album. All the new tracks are diverse and sound good to me.The Resistance was desperately ordinary imo (including Exogenesis)

Sorry Richard, but i completely disagree. Read Conor's reviews of the Muse singles. He is completely spot-on in my opinion.
The dubstep influence is awful conceptually and poorly executed - the "wobbles" or electronic tendencies sound too typical of the genre and their usage is familiar. I think the band overreached looking to bridge more musical styles and they failed doing it. |

These kinds of lawsuits are strange kinds of things. This fellow claims that Muse stole from his science-fiction work called exogenesis, which I have to say sounds a lot like Octavia Butler's trilogy from the 1980s, Xenogenesis. Plagiarism of ideas in that field is mighty hard to pin down. I vaguely remember a story in which the writer Brian Aldiss was asked to speak in court on behalf of another science-fiction writer who claimed his ideas had been ripped off by Lucas for Star Wars. This backfired because while Aldiss did say that Lucas ripped off ideas from other sf writers and movies, he also claimed that all science fiction writers have done so as well; it's an innate part of working in the genre, Aldiss thought.

I only said I personally liked them. Dupstep is something I have no clue about whatsoever and don't care for. Muse on the other hand are a vibrant band full of energy and ideas. They do borrow a lot for true but at the end of the day it still ends up being Muse in some form or other. Edited by richardh - September 14 2012 at 14:53 |
