I need some Vocal Oriented post-rock

I LOVE Post rock that is VOCAL oriented. Forgive me if I offend anyone. But I was wondering if anybody can recommend any VOCAL oriented post rock albums?

This category seems hit or miss for my personal tastes.

Example. September malevolence has an amazing VOCAL oriented post rock album entitled "after the darkness, there's a next".

But everything else by them seems to be primarily instrumental.

Another band I have opened myself to lately a lot is Early Day Miners (Arguably my new favorite band because of their tremendous output).

I absolutely LOVE the two albums I have by Raised by swans. Absolutely brilliant, emotional stuff on both albums. Very atmospheric.



And another excellent band all around is Vessels. I prefer this particular album though (White fields and open devices) Because it seems to be at least HALF Vocal oriented. Which is a shame because their vocalist is very nice sounding.

So anyway, I really love these bands at their vocal best. Please recommend me similar bands or other vocally oriented post rock (male or female vocals). Thanks.

Zilver Mt. Zion Has some nice Ambient sounds going on but I would not define what I am hearing as post rock, so much as minimalist/Ambient/Indi. Not bad but not quite what I am looking for. I prefer something more full sounding and atmospheric, yes melancholy but whilst maintaining some energy. Not bad for what it is though. But lacking in melodics.

Is Sigur Ros really considered post rock? Whatever they are, I have always liked what I heard from them.


Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson sounds good. I like what I am hearing from them so far. I feel like the vocals are against the music almost. But I might be able to get past that with a few more listens. He sounds like he's going for a cross between Black Frances and Wayne Coyne. And I love both the pixies and the Flaming lips. But for my money, I prefer the vocal approach of the other bands I plugged up there. But still not bad. I just wish the vocals didn't sound like an afterthought designed to say "f**k the music, f**k melody". But I shall listen on.

Enablers-I like the music very much. The couple of songs I heard. But what happened to the vocals? Not terrible, but almost, again I feel like they are saying "f**k you" to the music. Most of them are just spoken word. Not bad but I find myself wishing they were sung melodically. But some of them remind me of King Crimson circa 'beat' or three of a perfect pair. I will however listen on to this band to see what else they have to offer. I am just spoilt currently by Early Day miners, Bark Psychosis and the like. But this band is very good.

Maudlin of the Well-I like this the best so far of all you have recommended. Not sure what you mean by 'edgy' but I think they are the most unique and beautiful of all these bands so far. The Atmosphere, the melodics and the vocals all seem to resonate on the same frequency, rather than getting wires crossed in the wrong way. The only problem with this one is that after sampling the album most of it seems instrumental (I've only heard two vocal tracks?). Which is a damned shame because the vocal tracks are beautiful.

Maudlin of the Well isn't really a post-rock band, and i wasn't sure if the music what what you were looking for.

"Post-Rock" is probably more diverse sounding than most think it is. A Silver Mt. Zion is an offshoot of Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros are not only considered 'post-rock' but are the most popular PR band in the world. Personally, I never cared for them.

Going by your examples, have you heard the last Mogwai album?



Bullets In Madison may be for you (if you haven't heard them already).

The Mogwai song is good but again here the vocals seem more of an afterthought to add some extra atmospherics, rather than playing an important role with important lyrics.

Affirmative on the Bullets In Madison.

This is somewhat closer to what i'm feeling out in these other bands. Beautiful musical textures. Somber but present vocals with meaningful lyrics and actual vocal melodies instead of just random sounds designed to sound spacey. The question is, is this like one of two vocal songs on an album otherwise populated by 10 or 12 other totally instrumental tracks?

Where did you hear of Bullets In madison? I can't find them anywhere outside of amazon. And even there I only see one album.

Thanks. I don't mean to sound like a snob about vocals but for some reason Post rock makes the most sense WITH them than without them for my personal tastes. I just sort of tune out when there are no vocals or when the vocals are an after thought. Maybe because I am a poet and lyricist myself. But every time I hear primarily instrumental post rock I find myself saying "THIS NEEDS VOCALS!". With bands like ozric tentacles I don't say that, because I believe their music is geared that way to be primarily instrumental, but instrumental post rock sounds lacking to me. Even though the music is mostly beautiful.

I just downloaded the album "we became your family when you died" by Bullets in Madison. next I will check out the Enablers, but if most of their stuff is like the "spoken word" variety where the vocals are more there for an after thought I might actually just save them for certain moods. Because there are indeed times when I am into that sort of stuff. What do you think of september malevolence and Early Day miners?
