I am trying to track down what I think was an Erik Satie piece, which either ended or began with the phrase "No castanets, please." At least I think it was a Satie piece, but we listened to a lot of strange stuff back in the early '70s. So I turn to those who have memories perhaps more intact than mine. Any ideas?

Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

yeah that doesn't sound a Satie piece unless it was some pesky rock band trying to be silly, and I couldn't find any references online connecting Satie with that phrase

Yeah, it wasn't a rock band, those I can usually chase down. I obviously did a search before I turned to you all here and couldn't find anything connecting that phrase to Satie either, but as said we listened to some fairly unconventional things back then and Satie came to mind. I searched Amazon for Satie albums, hoping to find the album cover of the album I had, but of course that cover has been changed probably 37 times between then and now, if the thing is even still in print. It's driving me halfway crazy, because I can hear it as clear as bell. The "no castanets, please" were the only lyrics.

It is funny, i have a friend who just had the same problem regarding a different song, starting with some spoken words too, he tried the shazam application on his iphone/ipod and in 10 seconds he found what he was looking for years! So cool!. You can give it a shot if you remember how it was sung or spoken.

EDIT: Maybe it wasn't shazam or just a different version of it, it was an application that you can hum a tune or sing it yourself and it can track down what it is, it has a lot of 70's rare stuff too so it's worth a shot.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
