 Topic: meeting/knowing prog artists...

this isn't as impressive as threefates or maani meeting all the prog stars, but my mum went to high school with nik turner, long time hawkwind member and they were quite good mates. He sent her a signed and personalised copy of his side bands LP, inner city unit, as she is more of a punk rocker than a prog rocker!
anyone else have any cool stories like this?

Nope, none like that. The only thing I can say is that I've met Roine Stolt, Tomas Bodin, Hasse Froberg, Jonas Reingold, and Marcus Liliequist of the Flower Kings. Nothing long-time like that.

Since you ask, in approximate chronological order:
Fish makes a threatening move when I during an interview call Misplaced Childhood "a couple of pop song sellotaped together into one".
I've stayed at the home of Mike and Martin of IQ (and the late Ledge of Jadis and The Lens) for a week, and Martin later dated my ex-girlfriend.
I've shared a stage with Coste Apetrea of Samla Mammas Manna.
I told Ray Weston of Echolyn who the character Fantomas was.
I was lined up to do some remixes for Alamaailman Vasarat, but then my life fell apart (it's back together now, incidentally).
I've spent 15 minutes with Jon Anderson and Janeee, discussing Tales from Topographic Oceans.
Alan White has bought me a beer.
I filmed Yes rehearsing the track Magnification for the very first time (an eye-opener - Jon is Little Napoleon). Just before that, Chris Squire had asked me where the toilets were.
For Prog, I think that's about it.

Actually, empirically analyzed, that's pretty much the case. Now, whether you like it or not is another issue, but you have to agree that the various sections tend to hew pretty close to a pop song structure and that there is precious little musical cross-referencing between the bits.
I think I would have had an easier time accepting the album if they hadn't claimed it was one song, but instead several songs sequenced together.

Used to hang at a friends house on Huntington beach in the early 80's, Bill Ward was always over there visiting his Dad.
Met All the members of Dream Theater, talked to Petrucci and Labrie for about 15 mins each.

Many bands have used that technique from Yes to Genesis to Rush. So why single out this one?
Oh, to stay on topic I have met all the members of Protokaw including Kerry Livgren and spent an hour with them before a show.
I have met Robby Stienhardt and Dave Hope from Kansas at concerts.
All of the Flower Kings, IZZ, Spiraling, Tiles and Bublemath at Cal Prog at Calprog and partied with several of them. One of the best times I have ever had.
Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins handed out tickets to the show at the Roxy in 1980. Not exactly meeting them or knowing them.
Mark St. John who played lead guitar on Kiss's Anamalize album was a school mate and musican friend of mine.

Well, Belgian progheads have a lot of luck having most prog concerts organized at The Spirit Of 66 in Verviers (eastern Belgium) where there is no alternative exit (an old movie house transformed into an american bar then into a concert ballroom) other than the actual stage and through the hall. So the band cannot escape meeting its public, and in most cases , they come out to sign the Cds sold thru their organizations.
The list is too numerous to even start it , but we have met a lot of musicians . But most recently , I had a real nice chat with Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle of Hafield and The North. But I reckon , speaking for even a quarter of an hour with each of those Canterbury legend or even sharing a meal with Caravan (Boy, am I proud of that!!! , I feel like a teeny bopper ), is nothing like what ThreeFates gets a chance to actually meet and live closely to the stars, or get a chance to party with them.

Most of the stars I had a chance to meet seemed quite enjoyable and simple persons. The only ****STAR**** I met that was not really so is Blackmore (which I have re-named Blackmood). I met the guy backstage in Toronto back in 85, and he was a real a**hole.
