Topic: RIP Alberto Bonomi (D.F.A.) Posted: June 27 2011 at 14:24 |
Obituary written by Raffaella Berry, published in ProgArchives with her kind permission RIP Alberto Bonomi (D.F.A.) This is the kind of post I would have never wanted to publish. Even if most of my readers think I am very good with words, there are circumstances in which I find myself completely at a loss, and feel that whatever I say will ring hollow and contrived. Less than an hour ago, through my Facebook contacts, I learned of the tragic death of Alberto Bonomi, keyboardist of D.F.A, one of the best progressive bands to ever come out of Italy – a review of whose fourth and final album I had posted here a few months ago. I had met Alberto and his bandmates two years ago at NEARfest, and fallen in love with their music, so I was sad to learn that the band had called it a day because of the all too usual clashes between the life of a musician and family and work commitments. However, the terrible news of Alberto’s passing in a car accident have put things in a very different perspective. As soon as I read the news, I walked to my player and put 4th on, my heart heavy with sadness. As someone who has lost quite a few loved ones in the past few years, my thoughts immediately went to Alberto’s family and his former bandmates. The sense of sadness that I am experiencing now is not just for the loss of an outstanding musician, but for the loss of a man who, at 48 years old, was just 3 years younger than me, and whose untimely demise is going to leave a hole in many people’s lives that not even the passing of time will ever completely fill. My dear readers, as corny as it may sound, the bottom line is, life is short, and we are all hanging by a thread. Let us make the most of what we have today, instead of wasting it by wallowing in negativity and resentment. Let us celebrate Alberto’s life today by playing his wonderful music, the legacy he left to the world, and remember that music is, and always will be, one of the most powerful, life-affirming forces. Thank you, Alberto, and goodbye… Raffaella Berry |

Wonderful piece Raffa, you did a nice job as always. You know, the one thing that always stuck in my mind about DFA....I remember reading about them a long time ago, and the question was raised about why they took such a long break between albums. The response was basically that they were normal family men, not "rock stars", and that they did not want long periods on the road disrupting their lives and kids. That's what I remember about DFA, in addition to their superb music. Normal guys with talent *and* character. My heart goes out to their families, friends, and especially Alberto's wife and kids.

Thank you for the music Alberto, I hope your family and friends will get through this time of sorrow. Through all kinds of genres and approaches - I was just exhilarated and found myself thinking: the music will never stop. There´s always new pathways, new frontiers and new bands to check out. I found D.F.A. through PA, and I was overpowered with joy - jumping up and down, because there in fact was a band out there - and still going strong, who actually successfully brought the old madness and fire of Area to the fore, but with their own melodies and ideas. They proved that music never dies - it evolves, and people just pick up the baton and run for it - their own way. D.F.A. is the proof of this. Alberto Bonomi was just a brilliant keyboard player, and he will never be erased from my cd´s. As I said, the music never stops. P.S. That was beautifully written Raffaella. |

Sad news. I found DFA's 90's work to be some of the best out of Italy at the time. Lavori in Corso really shines.

Well put Raffaella, and i had no idea that they had disbanded.
These truly were humble family men who happened to be very talented.I mentioned in another thread that the live DFA i have from Nearfest shows the band in complete surprise at the applause and ovations they kept getting. They responded as if they weren't worthy.Humility indeed.
A terrible loss for his friends and family and a sad day for us who are fans of his music.

Oh my goodnes, what a shock! Raffaella has indeed stated , in her usual emotionally charged way, the depth of this tragedy and its effect on the prog scene. Nothing compared to the family's grief, I am sure....
We are all saddened .......

Alberto Bonomi of MoonJune Records' recording artist D.F.A. dies tragically at age 48 My personal friend, Alberto "Il Maestro" Bonomi, the highly-respected and much-loved keyboardist for the legendary Italian progressive fusion band, D.F.A, died tragically in his home town of Verona, in an automobile accident yesterday, Sunday, June 26th. Bino was a fabulous musician and composer, and a wonderful, gracious, humble person. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our condolences go out to his family and friends during this most difficult time. ... Riposi nella pace eterna, Carissimo Maestro! What terrible news! My heart grieves for his family.
I can think of no better elegy (with regard to his music, anyway) than the beautiful introduction to Mosoq Runa, on 4th. Edited by Todd - June 27 2011 at 16:41 |

One of the masterminds of DFA, which has been one of the best Italian items in the progressive world not only during the 90s revival but EVER, has gone to the fields of eternity.
My condolences to his family and friends, and my gratitude to him for all the great music he provided to the world - GRAZIE, MAESTRO ALBERTO!!
