Alright, so I'm coming to the point where I'm jumping all over the place from Genesis to The Mars Volta to Agalloch. I realize as I go deeper into the domain of Progressive Tech-Metal, the singing becomes the cookie monster grunts. No matter how much I love the music, I'm honestly starting to get turned off by the grunts. Does anyone know of groups that play this way, yet retain themselves from the grueling voice? (A mixture between grunts and singing is <3). Just hoping someone on here can help me! Thanks Smile

There are several bands that dont have a growler, and loads that are instrumental in Tech/Extreme

For those with vocals I suggest Madder Mortem.

Opeth does occasionally, especially some of their new stuff (although they aren't really "tech" metal)
Then there's the instrumental stuff, like Amogh Symphony, Blotted Science, Exivious, Chimp Spanner, Scale the Summit, or Animals as Leaders (especially AaL)
Also there's the black metal master Alcest (exp. Black Metal, 90% clean vocals)
Between the Buried and Me sings clean a lot also, and they are amazing.
Periphery's guitarist Misha Mansoor has a ton of little songs out on his SoundClick under the name of Bulb that are instrumental and fantastic
The new Cynic album is all clean vocals (and is also orgasmic)
Leprous also usually sings clean, although they're not thaaat "tech"
Protest the Hero usually sings clean also.
Then there's the thrash/prog like Watchtower and Spiral Architect who sing clean

There are more, too.

Lol, no. There is some growling and all the "clean" vocals you refer to are synthetized.

Yea there are some growling backings (on like one song for like 5 seconds) but vocoded vocals aren't death growls, so vocoded vocals=clean vocals.

The first bands that come to mind are Mastodon, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and High on Fire.

Not as heavy, but this band is definitely tech.  Sometimes a whole album of this can make you want to hurt someone, but sometimes it can be entertaining.

I love Between the Buried and Me, but clean vocals are definitely kept to a minimum on all albums except The Great Misdirect, where is more 50/50.

Cynic's definitely a good one, as is Protest the Hero (particularly the new album scurrilous).

My Dying Bride have a lot of clean vocals int heir music, several albums are entirely clean vocal as well, I'd recommend the newest album For Lies I Sire.

Others to try:
Arcturus
Canvas Solaris
Disillusion
Citriniti
Watchtower
Sikth
Voivod
Sculptured
Ram-Zet
Island
Mastodon
Ephel Duath

Good suggestions, but High on Fire is not prog (it's awesome, but is not prog!Wink)

Here is some cookie monster free tech/extreme/jazz/whatever metal. Mostly instrumental presentations. Lots of variation.

French Djazz

A couple less orthodox peaces from Canvas Solaris

A recent favorite of mine

My favorite saxophone Jazz/Metal

A little gothic avant/metal sound.

Another endorsement for Spiral Architect

The unassuming Tossin Abassi

Theatric Avant Metal, blended vocal styles.

Does there need to be vocals at all?  What about Chimp Spanner, or  Animals as Leaders?
