Topic: Yes vs. Genesis Posted: April 10 2011 at 19:48 |
A question that has plagued many prog fans from what i have seen. Both bands are fantastic but which do you think is superior? To me it is the Priest vs. Maiden of Prog Rock. I can't choose personally but maybe Genesis. So, Please i wanna hear your opinions

Make a poll and put this in the "Prog Polls" section. It makes more sense than a slew of the current ones.

I love Yes from 1970-1972. But even during CTTE they started dragging out their songs withe some album filler. My only conclusion is they were struggling to write 40 minutes of great ideas. Relayer is hit and miss too. Genesis started the 70s with the strong Trespass, but they went backwards with the slightly dull Nursery Cryme. Foxtrot was a strong return to form but I think gabriel let the band down a bit with some embarrasing lyrics on Selling england and some ugly vocals on the lamb. Genesis were at their best in 1976 and 77 with the release of Trick, Wuthering and Pidgeon. They were more consistent with a cleaner sound. Yes were better during 1970-72 due to Nursery Cryme being an underpar prog album and Musical box being a complete disappointment when you hear all the raving in here about it. Genesis were better during 1973-1974 although I was finding Gabriels voice and lyrics annoying and his image a bit w**ky such as shaving his head down the middle. It was a good time to replace him. Genesis were the better band from 1975-1978. Neither bands are in my top 5 prog bands. They are jethro tull, gentle giant, eloy, camel and caravan

I don't personally like 'versus' situations; to my mind, both bands have quality, strengths and weaknesses. Yes (the classical line-up) were superior musicians individually, and were also a great band unit, but Genesis had the superior artistic and writing quality of the two.

Genesis don't even come close and I don't understand why so many people praise them so much.

Has been done several times.
I prefer Yes in the period 1970-1974 but much prefer Genesis 1975-1980. After that franky I don't care that much although Genesis have managed a few good prog moments amongst their more commercial stuff. Yes are a virtual write off after 1980 although I do like Talk and occasionally give it a spin.
Measured over a long period of 1970 to present day its Genesis. If its just pre 1975 (the ''prog years'') then Yes were superior imo.

come now, there is no need to compare these bands. IMO Genesis makes better music, but I think Yes is a better band.

I'm not willing to having to choose either, with the best albums of both bands being among the best ever in prog, and also because they were very different, Genesis much better in the soft melodic side and Yes superior in the wild agressive-sounding side.
As a total career I go surely for Yes but the best Genesis moments are as brilliant if not more than the best Yes.

They were both brilliant, and a huge part of my teenage and later years. If it were a poll, no vote.
