Topic: Is Religion Actually Psychology? Posted: January 05 2011 at 20:48 |
Fire away, might chime in with some explaining later but right now I'll just let people handle the question.

Yes. No. Maybe. Depends on how you define your terms.
Thanks Slart, my mind isn't controlled. Except by my wife.

The Buddhism is still a main current in Japan. Of course, this thought that it transmitted it from India.
Psychology might relate a little to the religion. However, the Buddhism at least accompanies training. This has the purpose to escape from all actually pains.
There is a fact with a result from the cause. It is said that the result will change by doing training that deletes it when it is bad that the cause is true.
And, the training monk excludes all pains by training. Limitation of meal. The mind and body's purification with waterfall and water. Or, the mind and body is purified by using the sutra.

Your wife is likely a form of mind control and she is so good you aren't aware of it.

If Psychology can be deemed to have a goal, it would be that of
understanding humanity (thought processes and behaviours) Ergo, it might
be able to explain our need to construct religions but could not validate any transcendental belief system as real. Psychology seems to me to be a secular, atheist discipline? BTW Like many similar polls, the vagueness of the question I suspect is transparently deliberate just to elicit some entertaining\flaming responses

It's just that religious views seem to be entirely psychological in nature, whether believer or not. I'm not sure it's a separate discipline at all.

Textbook, there is a difference: you need a psychologist badly, but in the end only religion might be able to still save you.

I have this
problem that the mention of the word religion triggers a sort of revulsion
reflex with me. Too much harm is being done and has been done in that name. Makes me really, really angry. Effin' Pope and counterparts all around the globe!
Strange because I do believe in God or some higher being quite strongly.
In my view there has never been a repression and control tool quite as blatant
and despicable as religion, and yes, it's ALL psychology. I think it was catholic priests and monks who originally coined the phrase: Boys should be felt and not heard?
Oh yeah, before I forget: My God is miles better than all of yours! If you don't believe me, we can have a war about it. Bring it on, Suckers!

Is religion psychology?
No. Psychology is a branch of analytical science looking at human behaviours, and religion is a faith based belief in higher powers, incorporating a 'code of conduct' for living. In a nutshell..
Following a religious path can maybe be explained with a psychology approach, but no more so than following a certain political path, or a liking for prog rock.

Religion has a lot to do with psychology ... but of course they're not the same. It's not even like apples vs. oranges - more like apples vs. trees.

There's a difference though in how people make decisions - the religious ones tend to defer to authorities more easily. For example, if I asked you whether abortion was moral or immoral, you would rather quickly refer to scripture or other religious persons (leaders). I do think that religion affects how we think, and thus our psychology.

In a nutshell: Religion is applied psychology.

^ Replace "applied" with "exploited" or "abused", and you're getting there.

I don't need a Bible or religious authority to show why abortion is wrong.
