Which trilogy do you favor? I didn't include the new Star Wars trilogy...   For me, LotR by many, many miles, though I still really like the old SW (no, not Steven Wilson) trilogy.

I actually liked Star Wars very much. But I like LotR much better. By the way, would you define Star Wars as Science Fiction, or as Fantasy?

Fantasy, definitely. Just because it takes place in outer space doesn't mean it's Sci-fi. Sci-fi still has to be somewhat logical and plausible. SW is the exact opposite of that.

SW is generally considered 'Fantasy' but actually has as many similarities to 'Sci-fi' [Star Trek, Logan's Run] as it does Fantasy [LotR, Dune]-- the Rings trilogy is clearly superior to Episodes 4 thru 6, but as a whole saga I prefer Star Wars and am one of the few people who really liked the new trilogy

Well, I did like the new trilogy too. I'm not sure which of the two SW trilogy I prefer (perhas the older one), but the new is great too. Though in some parts the new Trilogy seemed a bit "forced" in order to match the events of the old one.

^ I thought that Hayden Christiansen was just a terrible actor altogether as Anakin, and the Emperor came off as extremely cheesy and cliched. I did like the first one, with the exception of JarJar Binks  .

I love both, but for entirely different reasons, I would need to be in a completely different mood to watch one or the other.
Star Wars is for fun, that's the point - the style of acting, I think, is quite deliberately not classic dramatic acting - there is a certain monotone that all of the characters have, even those portrayed by some of the brilliant actors in it who are Oscar-worthy in other roles (Christopher Lee, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson, etc.). It's that kind of detachment from real human emotion that somehow gives it its unique quality...I'd be interested in knowing the reason from Lucas himself, but it probably has something to do with making it palatable for kids without dumbing down the story line...
LoTR, on the other hand, has much of its magic in the believability of the characters, and their relationships - who can't smile at the friendship between Legolas and Gimli? It's a timeless story with its roots in Tolkien's experiences in World War I...

I agree with the bolded part, that really bothered me throughout episode II and III, he was a total robot. The Emperor/Palpatine was great though.
