I think I'm going to have to go with Eden Lake. Anyone who hasn't seen it, watch it. Very disturbing and hard to watch so not for the faint-hearted, but once you get through it you realise how good it actually is. Edited by The Pessimist - March 23 2010 at 10:13 |

I have only seen This Is England, and it was very good. I'll check those out, too, thanks for suggesting them.

Thanks for the tip - I haven't seen any of these films. I have This is England saved on my digibox though.
BTW, have you seen Mike Leigh's Naked? Easily one of the most intelligent and uncompromising films I've seen. It should be right up your alley, so to speak. |

I've only seen Scum and This is England. Both pretty good, and rather gritty. I think this is one thing the British film industry does well.
That said, my favourite British film is actually Withnail & I.. ![]() As an aside, for those who like satire, I recommend 'In the Loop' which is a feature length take on the sitcom 'The Thick of it' It focuses on the media management between Washington and London in the the build up to a Middle East military campaign. Very funny! |

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

You know, as soon as I saw this thread title I instantly thought EDEN LAKE.
Really fantastic movie. I've been lending my DVD out to everyone I know (and trust with my DVD...) in order to spread the word.
What did you make of the ending though?

Definitely contraversial, and unpredictable. I liked it though, probably the most disturbing bit in a way. And Jim, if This is England is recorded on your digibox, then I recommend you watch it as soon as ![]() |

Only we extreme pessimists of Britain would have it come to mind to name a movie production 'SCUM'.

Scum is a brilliant film, but I've gone for Dead Man's Shoes.

I saw This Is England, so my vote goes here, but I plan to see others as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_skinhead_films Not that I'm skinhead, but I'm also not against them. And after all, in these films, there's often turn in story that it makes them bad. Sometimes good, depends on circumstances. I like "MADE IN BRITAIN", very well made film about social descending. |

The Tim Roth film? That was very good, as I remember.

Yep, Tim Roth shines here. Sheer brutality of his performance and his facial expressions, that's sinister, yet interesting.
