Topic: Why why why hasn't Roger Waters released an album? Posted: September 21 2009 at 20:07 |
Ran out of space there. This thread is for real ROG fans who sort of understand what I mean! - Roger Waters hasn't released an album since 1992 (Amused to Death!)
- He released two updated political tracks in 2004 (Leaving Beirut and To Kill A Child)
- In 2007 he released a fillerish song for a movie track entitled Hello I Love You
- Earlier (before 2004) he had released one or two songs (for instance Each Small Candle)
excuse my shouting, but: WHERE IS MY ALBUM! He did release that opera who I do not care to name... that doesn't count. - Those who have followed Roger will know he tours frequently and impressively,
- also that he is much more political and a whole lot smarter than he ever was.
- He has become quite an imposing intellectual with a good historical consciousness (his awful opera is an example).
- He said in an interview in 2008 that he mainly continues touring for political reasons.
Now, with the recession and expanding wars in Afganistan and now Pakistan and the great crisis of modern society... why isn't Roger Waters in the recording studio? I mean, even the practically clueless David Gilmour got an "album" cut in 06. Even Richard Wright was working on an album and Nick Mason wrote a great book! Why why why? What events, personal situations, changes etc. forced Roger to abandon studio work (he has done quite a bit at various times this decade) and make virtually the only really political progster silent at such an important time? What do proggers out there think a Roger Waters album would look like circa 2010 anyway? BTW in the ancient guys coming up with new albums category , thanks to Peter Gabriel at least for the brilliant Burn You Up, Burn You Down on Big Blue Ball. It may not be an album, but it rocks! No thanks to the WHO, for their flat as H Endless Wire in 2006.

I heard he was working on a Broadway play version of The Wall. I'm hoping like hell that fell apart, I can't bear the thought of that album being discussed on the Today Show, or the thought of him "injecting some humor" into The Wall as I heard him say once. Instead of trying to wreck The Wall he should be working on getting out a high quality DVD of the live shows from the original tour. Now that would be a good use of Roger's time.
Maybe he doesn't feel he has a great album in him, in which case, it's a blessing that he doesn't just pump out more product like too many old farts.
Yeah, I know, that's cynical.....hey, I'm all for it if the music is great.

A few years ago I had read that he was indeed working on an album. It was even stated that it would be a double album, on one CD he would touch war issues (or political, I don't quiet remember now) and on the other CD he would thouch Love issues. I even think I read, when he played Each Small Candle and Flickering Flame in his tours, that those were supposed to be included in a forthcoming album. I'm still waiting.
Ofcourse I would also love to see the original shows of The Wall in DVD.

The guy has 65 years, he has been musically active for 45 years if I'm not wrong, has earned all the money and recognition he needs...................Let him enjoy life!!!!
If he wants to write an Opera, a Cantata or anything he wants...Allow him, he has gained that right.
BTW: I wish I was 10% clueless as David Gilmour, maybe he isn't worried about politics as Roger, but it's his choice...For God's sake, I'm tired to see how one man who has done so much for Rock and Prog as David, is bashed to praise another genius who doesn't need help.

How does writing a freaking opera not count as making an album just because it's not that album you wanted?
I thought Ca Ira wasn't bad, but then again I only listened to it once (for free via Ruckus) and I don't feel the need to buy it.

Why should he have to make another album?
Don't forget that the process of making an album is not an easy one, and Roger isn't exactly a young un' anymore.
I'd have also thought that his discography would have spoken for itself by now too.

Is this a case of fanboyism run wild? Mr. Waters has his own life and can do as he pleases. His contributions stand tall - he doesn't need to do anything else. At the same time, I understand the feeling of waiting for a favorite artist to produce something new. The time between Peter Gabriel's So and Us was almost torture for me. But that's a problem I had many years ago.
And why why why whine about Gilmour being clueless? He made the album he wanted to make and it was a good one. Despite his claim, Roger Waters was not Pink Floyd. I agree with Ivan about Gilmour bashing - the man doesn't deserve it at all.

One think is for shure. If he would release a new record it would be either great or awful. Some feeling I have...

Waters has treated us to exactly ONE decent solo album, and that was nearly twenty years ago.
Why bother him?

I'm not a fanboy either! - I'm a deranged disciple! Seriously before I read Hume or Aristotle I listened to the lyrics of Roger Waters. It probably greatly sparked my interest in Nietzsche and later Marx I was just new to middle school (actually probably late elementary but I can't remember) when I discovered Pink Floyd and bought "all their discs in a hat"! IN SHORT I'M COMPLETELY BIASED AND UNREALISTIC but pulling myself together: IF i was rational I could still claim that Roger has given us less than he should have, for reasons I have already cited. - He is not to old to tour or record here and there
- He did a whole opera
- He's Roger Waters
all valid refutations And I apologize for bashing David Gilmour, but the man simply does not understand what PF was really about - only a little of the emotional feeling and the best guitar playing in Rock... although he almost gets there sometimes. Roger too, of course, retreated from PF's main political/sociological direction even with the Wall in some way and definitely by the time of Pros and Cons. Radio KAOS was just bad, but he was trying to popularize the PF approach (by selling out and junking every aspect of it). Amused to Death proved he still had it, despite falling apart a bit at the end (Watching TV?). EDIT: if you guys can't tell Alan Parsons Project is in my Pantheon (sic?)

Hi,
I guess you do not have enough respect for Roger and his desire to do something different than simple rock music ... CA IRA ... obviously means nothing to you ...
Between you and I, Roger needs a break to get his stuff together ... he does not have to work ever again if he does not want to. So anything he does is either because he has a desire to, or he caved in to the amount of money promised ... for which he would probably be called a fool for not accepting it!
All that said, I think that Roger tried hard to do something good with CA IRA ... but it has one majestic flaw ... there is no way that he was ever going to put a dent in the world of classic music just because his name was Roger Waters ... and I really think that the only think that is really missing is a nice electric guitar to do a couple of things he wanted that the violins and conductors at hand could not do ... the highs were missing ... the passion was intelectual, not real ... and this all coming from a man that cried his heart out in The Wall.
Will he have a new album? Sure ... someday ... does he have to do it today? NO.
But I really think that CA IRA getting trashed silly and not selling is gonna get on his gonads ... I don't think he is going to trash the pompousness and the world of classical music, but I think that he is going to stay away from it ... I don't think that those people took him seriously ... and as mentioned above, I think that he tried to ignore his source and soul ... and as such the piece of music suffered. CA IRA has some nice moments, but it is not much ... compared to so many other musical pieces out there ... in fact it is not even memorable compared to some of the things that Roger has done!
Take a break Roger ... figure out what you need to do and then do it ... forget the rest, including all this!

If I were the artist I would get a lawyer to put together a get well card with a big finger sticking out of it ... better yet, I'll get Hipgnosis to make a cover ... and give it to the fans ... it wouldn't be the first time that Roger has trashed some fans (check out some bootlegs ... )
There is no artist out there that makes music "for you" .... unless you are some kind of record company stooge. And remember, that Pink Floyd and Roger have been on the outside of that ... from the start ... why would you want to change that?

Well... I say what I think:
BecauseI was disappointed by former Pink Floyd members (not Syd Barrett) albums... I do not see the need for an album of Roger Waters. Of any kind!

Don't want to sound like a fan boy but Amused to Death is one of my all-time top ten favorite albums and I would love to see him make another album, in fact a remember a interview about ten years ago with him raving on about another concept album. However, he can do whatever he wishes with his time, it is not up to us fans. What would be cool is to see Pink Floyd reunite!

Don't disrespect Watching T.V.! Despite how silly it sounds there is a meaning and a very deep one at that
