my Stereo recently packed up and i was loking at the moment i am using by DVD player as my stereo and i was thinking what would be the best equipment to replace it a new Hi-Fi or Surround sound what are peoples views?

Nad integrated amp, nad cd player + Mission loudspeakers and QED cables...(all english equipement)

As far as I know, there's no good reason to use surround sound on anything except for DVD-A, so unless you have any music on that using stereo (the ones oliverstoned says, I have no idea about brands/models!) would not only be cheaper, but it'd avoid digital processing into extra channels and so get a much clearer sound. If it's DVD-A you're playing through your DVD player then I don't really know if there are any good surround systems aimed at the domestic market, and you'll probably have to shell out a bit to get any kind of decent setup.

If you want a spatial sound, better use a subwoofer like this one (with at least a 38cm loudspeaker to reproduce extreme bass):

Magnat omega 380 (including a 200w transistor amp):
